  • SERVICE INFORMATION INFINITI recommends Genuine NISSAN Ester Engine Oil available at your INFINITI dealer. See this bulletin for further detail.

Service advisor told me the other day that when I come in for my oil change next month to use the Nissan Ester oil for my next oil change, and to not use Mobil 1 synthetic. I don't know what to really listen to. He told me it quiets down the engine more than what other oil's do. He said this is specifically for the 2nd Gen FX35/50, and showed me the TSB for it. So I researched it and found it.

M1 isn't even a true synthetic any more. It's not all that good in our engines apparently. I can't decide if I want to deal with finding a new oil though.

How is it not a true synthetic anymore?

For the past two oil changed I've been using QuakerState Synthetic lol.

It's a type IV oil. It's all this technical crap. Apparently other companies made synthetics that weren't true, Mobil tried to sue since theirs was true, and lost. So they decided to just also make a cheaper product instead of losing money. I think though that Castrol 0W-30 European Formula is a true synthetic and works well in our engines per oil analysis tests. This is all stuff I read on my350z one night.

I forgot to add that I remember seeing one or two people having slight valve or lifter noise on the HR motor. Using the Nissan ester oil will fix this. I don't have this, but if anyone does try switching to ester oil =]

Definitely will try it to see if helps. My Nissan is starting to sound like an old Mitsubishi.

You really got me doing a lot of research on this now. I've always been a huge M1 fan. I personally think that Nissan just wants you to spend more loot at their dealers. I've seen on sites/forums that Nissan dealers are charging over $100 just for an oil change w/ filter using the Ester oil. I don't know bout you but I'd rather get a 5 quart jug at Walmart for just a little over 20 bucks.

+1 Infiniti just want to keep it within the family..

If you want to teach yourself about oils and get some good advice, this is the site:

I've had this conversation before on other threads. There's nothing wrong with the OEM recommendation but you can do better if you put a little effort into oil selection. North American oil formulations should be picked based on your daily driving habbits, climate, altitude, etc. The OEM recommendation works universally, but not as well as an oil formulated to work under certain conditions.

Picking random oils and trying them is fine, but how do you know they are any better or worse than the OEM oil? The answer is oil analysis.

My advice would be to stay with the OEM recommendation unless you plan on getting your used oil analyzed so you can make informed decisions about staying with what you have or moving to something that improves engine wear and performance.

My Infiniti Dealer uses Mobil 1.
That is what they recommended in my 09FX35 if I wanted to switch to synthetic.

I used it in my 07 G35X and my 09 FX35

My dealer uses crappy Quakerstate Synthetic oil or the Ester oil.

I always bring my own oil in to the dealer and use Mobil 1 Extended Performance Synthetic oil with the Infiniti oil filter.

My local Infiniti dealer wants $140 to do an ester oil change =[

The Ester oil seems to have quieted down the lifters a bit. Stated weight is the same as the Mobil 1 5W30 I was using but the Ester seems stickier. (Reminds me of the Lucas Oil demos that we've all seen at parts stores.)

The parts manager told me they were instructed to use Mobil 1 if they ran out of Ester so I'm sure either one is fine. At $8 a quart the prices are just a little above Mobil 1 so I guess I'm going to try Ester for the next few oil changes to see if the lifter noise stays away and how the oil looks after 3000 miles.

Sounds good bro

I've been using Mobil 1 Synthetic EP (Extended Performance) for a month already and I did notice a more quiet engine too. I didn't have lifter noise, but the car did sound quieter than before after switching. I may try Ester oil out when I go in for my next oil change in January.

I also use Mobil 1. BJ's had it on sale for $21 for 6qts and I bought 6 cases of it. Guess I'll be using Mobil1 for a while.. I think regularly changing your oil is more important than the type of oil you use. As long as you use the recommended weight and viscosity, your engine will pretty much last forever. I never had any engine issue with my last two nissans. Besides, I'm only keeping my FX35 until they release the FX37's... :smile (2):

Yup, VQ's are still one of the most reliable engines around today. Mine is dead quiet all the time. Sometimes it's on and I forget it's on because it's so quiet, and turn it off by mistake when I push the start button:laugh:

I just had my oil changed at the Infiniti dealership. It costs $34.95, which includes lube, oil/filter change, lubrication of body and hinge points, and then 8 inspections and car wash/vacuum. Since it seemed so cheap, I asked what oil they use and they said valvoline something I can't remember now. I asked about the Ester oil and the service manager chuckled and said that costs $20 a quart. He just recommend doing the above service every 3,750 miles or 3 months and he said that will be plenty good. They are a dealer that I have built a good relationship with so I respect their recommendations. Just thought I'd share from my experience.
