Questions About Tires/AWD (and a crazy story)

So, I wanted to get some advice from the experts out there (I appologize in advance for the long message). I bought my '05 FX35 AWD about a year ago as a certified pre-owned from the dealership. It had 40k miles on it, and when they sold it to me they said they had put "new tires" on it. Well....they really had only replaced the front tires. The rears had some decent wear on them. After buying the car and getting it home, I noticed a cut in one of the rear sidewalls, so I brought it back to the dealership and they replaced that tire for me free of charge (leaving me with 3 new tires).

Finances have been tight, so here I am a year later with the same set of tires (3 replaced a year ago and one really worn) and its time to do something about it. I take the car to a local Firestone and the guy tells me I cant replace just the one tire because it will screw with the AWD system. He says I have to replace all 4. Hearing that, I took it to the dealership to see what they said. The service guy tells me its no problem putting just one new tire on it....and the OEM replacement will run me $400 (Bridgestone Potenza 265/60/18). Since they were already working on the car, I said fine, just do it. A day later, I get a call and he tells me I really should replace both rear tires since the other one only has 4/32 left on it. When I hear that, I say "Forget about it...I dont want to buy 2 Potenza's for $800 that apparently will only last me 20k miles".

So...with all that said, it brings me to the questions I had.

1)Will replacing just one or two tires at a time screw with the AWD system?
2)Should I even consider just replacing the 1 tire if the other rear only has 4/32 left on it?
3)I don't think I want to go back to the Potenza's regardless. What suggestions do you have for mainly warm weather (Dallas) tires that see mostly highway and little if no performance driving?

Thank you very much for your input!

A set of Yokohama spec x come out to be about 550$ on tire rack. This is assuming your in the state. It's about double the price in Canada be glad :)

Sewell Infiniti off Lemmon.

What tires would you recommend for less than $800?
Hmmm, interesting. I went there just to get my alignment after getting new tires. Went to Discount Tire, just down Lemmon on Inwood. I believe it was $650 for my Hankook Ventus.

Out of curiosity, who's your service advisor?

You're in Dallas so I suggest visiting the warehouse that operates Gripston.com and buying the Hankooks in person and have then installed and balanced at a local auto shop. it shouldn't be more than $700 for all 4 tires and installation and balancing.

That's a crazy write up. I'd ask a tire shop expert (or someone on IS) about tread depth and AWD. Lots of paranoia regarding the AWD system but there has to be a certain amount of allowable variable in the same size tire for tread loss.....BTW Hankook Ventus rho6 or Parada Spec X are BOTH better rated tires for our ride and are much more affordable.....

Wow the ways that dealers and shops try to stick it to you is amazing! I don't know about just one tire but I had to replace 2 of my fronts before changing out my rears a year later and I had no issues at all with the AWD system.

if a shop guy said i HAD to replace all 4 of my tires i'd laugh in his face and drive off. if he were to RECOMMEND replacing 4 tires then i'd check the tread depth and think about it. firestone and dealers will charge you full msrp for tires, go to discount tire or similar if you want to save some $$, like stu said u could get 4 good tires mounted/balanced and installed for $7-800ish.

It is triple the price in Canada. The best price I got locally in Vancouver is $1500 before tax. :frown:

From my understanding, It is always recommended to replace tires at least in pair or all of them. You want to keep your rear pair the same traction both left and right. Also the front pair have to be the similar traction both left and right. Replacing tires in pairs will not screw your AWD system as long as they are same type of tires. Because of the different weight distribution of the FX (our car is not 50/50) your front and rear traction will always be different, even you have the same tires all around. However, your left and right must be similar. If your AWD complains, you will see some warning lights on your dash. And the reason to do tire rotation is just to have even wear on all tires, so you replace all at once when all tires wore down.

the cheapest quote i got local in van for the yokoham spec x was 1040 mounting balancing and tax included but its still so much more expensive that the states. Do you usually shop local for your tires or take a drive down to Bellingham?

If you want to drive to Seattle I can set you up with a drop ship and install deal I used but you are looking at another 1.5 hours of driving each way  Bellingham sounds like a logical choice geographically.

I think you meant Vansterdam not Vancouver right? :wink (2): I normally shop locally, because i don't have the other big enough vehicle to transport all those tires from the border to the shop for install.

If I can get it installed in Bellingham, it will be nice. Still I don't mind spent 3 hrs to save my another $500. (I don't even get paid that much for 3 hrs of my time at work) :wink (2): Appreciated for the offer Logan. I will let you know after I wore out my Nitto.:wink (2):
