Burning Engine Oil?

So I just did my oil change yesterday (2nd time) and I put the old oil back into the 5 qt jug and it only filled about 3/4 of the way. I had another full jug so I compared it and I would estimate about 1 qt or 3/4 qt of the engine oil had "burned." Is this normal? I did the previous oil change so I know I put in 5 qts of oil originally. I read another thread about someone burning 2-3 qts between oil change and I know mine is not that extreme, so I don't know if I need to take my car in to the dealer for an oil-consumption test. And its impossible to get any reading with the poorly designed dipstick, so any advice would be great appreciated!

Edit:
Oil changed at 4000 miles (5 months).

I would think that the 3/4 qt you are missing is what never got drained completely and was also left in your old oil filter. Was the drain plug the lowest point on the pan or did you drive up on ramps.

I would monitor every 1,000 miles and see how your oil levels are at.

I don't think VQ35DE's burn oil as bad as VK45DE's, but you will get oil blow back in your manifold.

Try an oil catch and see how much you collect!

Thats crazy! I just noticed the same thing my last oil change...I was about 3K overdue. Added new filter and five qts...will monitor but wouldnt worry too much

my 2006 fx35 with 60k miles burned about 2.5 qt at 5k mile oil change intervals. I use royal purple oil and filter. asked the dealer and they said even at 1 qt for every 1k miles is not excessive. i call bs, one qt is too much oil to burn every 1k miles. i think the half qt i burn every 1k miles is too much.

one possible solution...

that i have used on other cars with great success is going to a mixed fleet HDEO, like RotellaT6 or M1 TDT or Delvac1. it is slightly thicker (5w40), but also has a much more robust detergent and dispersant package. this combination, can slow or stop oil usage past the rings. the HDEO oils are also very low volatility oils, so if you are flashing some off, this will stop that mechanism.

I just changed my oil and I had the same experience as you. I did also drain my oil catch can (it had about 1 cup of oil).

you guys are so right about the oil dip stick being hard to read.

Oil changed at 5000 miles

are you using synthetic oil ?

I am ....
pretty sure he is

could it be something with the synthetic oil? . cause im running regular still and never experienced anything like that . i would like to change to synthetic once i get a couple more engine mods. also on my previous ride i notice it would burn a lil bit of oil once i switched to synthetic .

also could be that synthetic has smaller molecules and can seep through cracks where conventional oil does not. That's why some older engines leak oil once switching to synthetic.

i switched to synthetic on my previous car when it had 28k miles and i got rid of it when it had 56k . so it wasnt really old . but i dont know it could be possible what your saying

2000 fx 35 burns motor oil

took a road trip to New Mexico and back TO California
during summer time , checked dipstick & it's dry.

according to Metro Infiniti in Monrovia Ca
Nissan Engine (infiniti) does burn oil especially when the car is OVER 70000 MILES

AND IT TAKES 6 QUARTS OF MOROTR OIL NOT FIVE PER SERVICE ADVISOR @ INFINITI DELAER.

i having the same issue.. and is annoying i change my oil every 3500 miles and it still burns oil like crazy to the point that it start flashing the oil sign on the dashboard.. i talked to a friend of mine ad he mentioned that it might be time to replace the pistons rings/seals.. now he said that like it was super easy..

questions.

how hard and how much work would that be?

if one get to do that kind of work what else should one replaced since that kind of job is not done very often..?

thank you guys..
