Replacing HID bulbs

A D2S bulb has a reflector/shield located on the top of the bulb. It will probably give you a slight decrease in output in the upper cutoff. Meaning street signs probably will not be lit up as well as using a D2R. But other than that, you should have no problems.

Nice write up. I have factory HID bulbs if anyone needs. Just shoot me a price. They are from ray catena infiniti in NJ. Have a whole bunch of sets that came from a friend all wrapped the way you would get them if they came from the dealer. let me know if you want them. AP0223@ gmail. com I can send pics as well if you please.

Thanks for this write up:good::good:. I did the 500k morimoto upgarde today and this write up helped me a lot. I can't believe how tight the spaces to access the bulbs are. It took me close to 1 hour to do the job and a cut on my finger. The tough part for me was setting the new bulb in place.

Why have I not thought of that? LOL.

You bet, I enjoyed it on my first night driving out. When I set the light on high beam, even the overhead road signage gets lit up.

The 5000k upgrade is like night and day from OEM set up. When used in sync with the KP Tech Matrix Decoder, I am able to set it on high beam and still operate the fogs simultaneously. The result is incredible.

I should have taken some shots on a perfectly dark I80 coming back from the midwest. These 5000K reflect like mad! :good:

someone asked what the yellow cable does...i didnt read all the posts to see if there was an answer but the yellow cable controls the tiny motor inside the bi-xenon housing which is what allows one bulb to be used for low and high beams. It adjusts the metal shield position.

Extremely thankful for this thread. I just switched to a FX45 from a BMW 335i. I love the comfort and overall convenience of the FX45 along with the power from the V8. I was a big fan of the forums that BMW had.

2 mechanics locally wanted to charge labor and parts approximately $225 to install 1 HID bulb. Through this forum, I was able to find a guy on eBay and instructions on how to install myself. Saved about $180 total.

Using a pocket mirror was extremely helpful, as was removing the radiator reservoir. I am as far from a mechanic that you can be and it took me about 20 minutes total.

Thanks again!

I think the metal rod for the bulb has to be pointing up to align perfectly with the notches in the housing.

FWIW, I double checked this and I think you have it opposite (at least for the passenger side. Mine would only go in with with the metal rod of the bulb on the bottom.

BTW, does anybody have a good link for where to buy the D2S 5K upgrade? I'm kinda getting lost in the options.

Ridiculous.. this was my hardest installation ever. Lol
and I can't get the silver back in because I have to get the other retaining clip to snap... which can't snap in!

You've got loooong fingers Gold. So what's the problem? Same principle with how to work them on in those "tight" places. LOL

Show us some night pics bro ;-)

Lmao, that escalated quickly!
But one of my bulbs went out. So I checked to see whether it was the bulb or ballast. Fortunately, it was the bulb which gave me an excuse to buy tsxr lense and upgrade to their 5000K bulbs from stock.

So I practiced removing/installing the bulbs using my old working bulb. Unfortunately, I must have bent the the rod on the bulb because although the cut off is there... There's like this odd dark spot when it shines on the road. I might just have to remove the headlight assembly, to paint, install lens, and bulbs.. Before placing it back

Hello everyone. Great write up, thank you OP! My wifes 2005 FX35 passenger side bulb went out and all the other lights work fine. Where's the best and cheapest place to get a stock replacement? If I only replace the bad one, it should match the good side on brightness right? Thanks

It is recommended to replace both.
The bulbs I went are the Morimotos 3Five half the price of OEM bukbs. I choose the 5000K color, stock is 4300K
