Jumbo Boost

Huh. I thought I remembered you talking about different boost levels. Maybe you just meant that you have an iron will and modulate with the gas pedal...?

I like the new catch can.
Changing boost levels is as easy as hooking up the Osiris cable to a laptop. When we first put the FX on the dyno, tuning was done at 6,10,12,14 & 16psi. At 16psi the transmission was just starting to slip. We backed off to 12psi and I haven't changed it since.

Haha i had to realy withhold myself not go go to 14 psi. You realy choose the safe side wich is best.
Could you contact these guys from cpt and ask if they will attent sema this year brad...??

Perhaps my expectations were a little high for the 1/4 mile.

My first and second drag attempts ever, last night at Royal Purple Raceway in Baytown, Texas. After having done this, I can say there is a learning curve. Taking a look at just these two slips, the car is capable of maybe a half second faster than I was able to drive it last night.

1st run
R/T .785
60' 2.684
330 6.555
1/8 9.5
mph 84.17
1000 12.015
ET 14.123
MPH 107.19

No burnout as my heavy radial tires wouldn't benefit from it all that much. As it turns out I didn't ever see the traction control light come on, nor did I feel any type of slide or drift. I went from full brake to full acceleration on the green light. The car bogged slightly, started a little slow until the turbo was making boost, then pulled all the way to the finish.

2nd run
R/T 1.065
60' 2.468
330 6.335
1/8 9.302
mph 83.42
1000 11.834
ET 13.962
MPH 105.96

For the second run my experienced drag buddy explained how to power-boost. As the yellow lights on the tree started lighting I was using both feet. One hard on the brake and the other one on the gas, getting the rpms up to about 2000. On the green light I took my foot off the brake and smoothly pushed the throttle to the floor. Reaction time was worse on this one but it was a faster run.

After my two runs I wanted to cool off, get some food and watch. Being in Texas, there were a LOT of big trucks and a few SUVs as well. Turbo Diesels, modified Z71 motors... even one or two drag trucks. I watched 25-30 runs of nothing but trucks. They were all running 15-16 seconds, besides the purpose built drag monsters. Had I been in any kind of truck bracket I would have finished in the top five. It gave me more respect for my time slips.

Now that I know what the car does in it's current setup, the shop offered to tune it for launching. They told me today that the bogging that I felt was actually the computer closing the throttle during power-boosting. Apparently there is a connection to the brake signal, cutting throttle to protect the transmission when both the brake and throttle are pressed. They thought that a 2.0 second 60' should be within range with the current setup if they fix that and dial in some launch tuning.

I have to admit I was a little dissapointed about the time after my first run. My friend brought me back to earth... 12psi at 400whp on stock wheels and radial tires. He pointed out what every other truck/SUV was doing. For immediate improvement: Reaction time (experience), fix the launch tune, up the boost to 14psi = 425whp, lighter wheels, remove a little weight (stereo gear and if I were REALLY serious, the back seats) and I can hit that 12 second time slip. I seriously doubt I'll go to those lengths but I will definitely drag again. It was fun and a pretty serious adrenaline rush. I got a headache, "coming down" lol.

My friend also took some high res photos and videos of both runs so as soon as I get them I'll post them up.

Yeah I was expecting high 13's until you got the hang of it. Only two runs though? I was hoping to see the times continue to drop to around 13.5 at least. Get back out there soon, you can only improve!

Yeah I could have squeezed in one or maybe two more. Got there a little late and there were a lot of participants. It took about 45 minutes to get through the staging area. What I really wanted was a real match-up against another SUV. My second run was against a purpose built drag Camaro, with a 3.77 1/8 mile. It was a little distracting to see him so far out in front of me. I think that's why my reaction time was so bad the second time - I was in awe of that monster. Like I said - I really wanted to watch. Being staged I couldn't see any of the races. Watching helped me understand what most cars really do.

60' is pretty crucial in drag racing, a single turbo is gonna be a bit slow off the line unless you have a manual and can really launch it hard. Your trap speed shows you're making decent power. I had full sound system and interior on my drag days, only change I did really was swapping rear wheels. You might get down to 2.1-2.2 60' with drag radials.

Decent runs Jumbo. Your friends right about trimming those seconds down with lightening the FX.
You should do a lot better the next time out. I will include your time on the official time chart as soon as the forum gets fully converted over to vb4.

lebron (Min) did 13.3 or 5 when he ran with his built motor and JWT 530. He only went to the track once I think, don't remember if he ever posted a time slip though.

Photos have arrived!

I built my FX to be quiet - it's difficult to hear all by itself, even without other cars around. That's exactly what I wanted so I guess you'll just have to come visit in person to hear the real thing!

I wish we could race against each other sometime, to get an idea how it runs off the line and towards the top end. Maybe over Christmas? That's the best weather for racing. Broke into the 14's on Dec. 20th.

I think it would be pretty sweet to get the Texas boys to the drag strip to have some fun like they do in Cali. If you're serious we should start planning something ....

Today at lunch I lost the FX. Hydroplane on a road, spun three times, hit concrete and trees. Three people in the car - no injuries. Front and side airbags went off. I was heartbroken to watch it get trailered to the impound lot. Will spend the next few weeks haggling with insurance I am sure.

This is about as depressed as I could be over a car. Just glad nobody was hurt and I have a backup vehicle.

Damn Brad, a very sad day indeed. So sorry to hear about big red, at the same time relieved to hear that you and your passengers are unharmed.
