Leather seats in our FX

i wanna se proof from infiniti that the seats are vinyl with a thin layer of leather on top. that doesnt even sound like it makes sense. how can you have a vinyl seat and then a supper fine "layer" of leather covering the vinyl? leather is not thin, its pretty thick & durable unless its stretched which makes no sense for infiniti to even do that. if anything i would say the seats are just straight up vinyl & the dye they spray is cheap & doesnt hold up for a long period of time. i would love to know the truth behind the mystery of the crappy leather infiniti seats lol!
Are yours ripped apart like mine... if they were you could see what i'm talking about!! Ripped them open and see for your self. The leather is actually thiner than 5 mm!!

the seat faces are leather but the sides are vinyl
that's leather. there are all kinds of leathers & all of them recieve all kinds of treatments & processes, then tanning & dying to get them to look the way they do. if the top layer that is treated dry's out it can become brittle & even peel, crack & delaminate. when a leather is very thin then it is usually a split. that'as when a hide or skin is cut into more than one layer to get more area coverage. leather can be paper thin & still be leather. the faces of all the seats are real leather. where infiniti screwed up aside from the actual quality of the leather was in not keeping the whole outer bolster all leather. the outer bolster lower is vinyl & is usually the first to crack split & rip. too bad infiniti don't use one of these to test there upholstery materials

lol i dont own an infiniti but i detail a ton of g35 & g37 cars. take some pics of your seats.

I had my driver's seat repaired with OEM "leather" at a local upholstery shop. Removing the seat, removing the seat cover, removing the damaged panels, replacing and re-sewing in the new panels (in my case three panels, side, front & seat top) was $400. Seat looks brand new now.

This disappoints me. I had an aruguement the other say with someone who kept saying that Infiniti is a luxury car company, I agree somewhat BUT none of these things have happened to my familys Mercs or Bimmers...

Where at? Eventually I am going to need to get them done. I stopped cleaning and conditioning them because there is almost no point. 63K miles and they are starting to look worse than my 91 325i...

I hear ya, SC. I would argue that Infiniti is a luxury line, but if you look at the price points, it's less expensive than the BMWs and Mercs. I guess the quality has to be sacrificed somewhere in order to lower the price. I'm not justifying them - I'm dissapointed with several of these types of things. But since I don't have the money for an X6, I'll stick with my FX and be happy that I paid 25K less. It's a value thing. Do I think they should improve - ESPECIALLY the interior because it's such a visibile, presentation type feature of any car. Hopefully this type of feedback reaches the company and they do something about it in the future.

anyybody w/ an 07+ should still be under warranty, get it replaced b4 your warranty runs out!
I agree. Seats look worn and crappy on mine as well. You guys ever noticed how good the seats look in a Range, even one with 100K miles on it? Land Rover may have their problems, but they seem to be using high quality materials on their interiors. Wish Infiniti would do the same. Oh well, guess you get what you pay for.
I am not a big guy just tall (6'3") and noticed if you slide into your seat the cracks and creases happen WAY too fast. I figure I can just change out seat material eventually instead of being careful everytime I get in and out.
my dad had a 13 yr old toyota crown the leather looks pristine when he sold it and it had over 300k on it... my uncle has a 15 yr old audi and it also has pristine leather and it has 400k..... all of them were barely maintain and keep in moldy environment maybe that makes a difference? but still i'm very disspointed with the leather in the infiniti, i havn't seen one infiniti older than 2 yrs with good OEM leather seat, unless it has seat cover but to me that defeats the purpose of paying more for leather seats
My FX does have the cheapest leather of any car I've owned. Mine only has ~20K mi. on it and the leather is already creasing on the front seats. I'm already talking to my interior guy about options.
On my previous IS350, the car had ~36K on it and the leather was perfect. On my old Protege5, the car has aftermarket Katzkin leather and it has 90K on it with perfect leather. My wife's old Integra had Katzkin as well and it had 50K mi. on it with no imperfections. Keeping in mind that a Katzkin kit is only like $700; I'd expect more from a "luxury brand".
Honestly though, I'm finding that Infiniti's don't have the greatest fit and finish in general and the seats aren't any different. It just seems as if Nissan cut a lot of corners to hit a price point. We've established that the seats aren't great. But on mine (keep in mind it has under 20K on the odometer), the car is already starting to rattle somewhere in the dash, the passenger window and sunroof squeak, and the paint is just total junk. I've found that the paint is at least as fragile as the leather.
I love the car overall, but maybe I just expected too much? As I mentioned my previous IS had no issues with fit or finish and for the most part, Lexus hit around the same price points as Infiniti.
