getting a new engine, got a couple of questions.

When the temperatures started dipping below 20 at night about 2 months ago I noticed my 2006 FX35 AWD with 40k miles on it sputtering after I turned it on in the morning. A couple of times it actually died and I had to restart it, and there were two instances when it wouldn't even turn over. The dealership went through a a myriad of tests and possible fixes. They changed the battery out to one with a higher cold cranking power and replaced some other thing I can't pronounce. They cleaned the throttle body, tested all the injectors, and still it acted like crap after sitting overnight. They've had the car for a month now and last week I had to stop in to grab some things out of it. They walked me to it and told me not to be too alarmed when I saw it. They had the thing parked in a service bay with the entire front of the engine removed. They were flying some Infiniti tech in from downstate (that's what they told me) as a last ditch effort to see if he could find something wrong with it.
So Tuesday of this week I got a call from them and they said that they couldn't find anything wrong with it and since they already had most of the engine out they were just going to pull the rest and put a new one in, under warranty. yaaaa me.

So my questions are;
Will my new engine have a new warranty or is it only going to be covered for the rest of the current warranty?
Is my car going to be worth more now then it previously was now that it has a new engine?
What's the best way to break it in?
How jealous are you? :-)

no jealousy here lol but I do not think that your fx will be worth more unless they put the odometer back to 0 which is unlikely and illegal so a new engine is good but I think you will have to change the oil really quick during the break in. good luck and enjoy.

although having a new engine is sweet!!! I don't think it will raise the value of your car (trade in/private). I would think someone would be weary about a car with 40k miles that for some reason had to have a new engine installed. But, if you don't plan on selling your fx for a while which i doubt you do, thats a pretty sweet deal. Same warrant though.

damn, I was thinking that it may raise a red flag with someone if they saw it on a carfax. I'd probably be a little wary too if I went to buy a used car and it had a new engine. I suppose my biggest hope was that it came with a renewed warranty (just on the engine).
Thanks for your input guys, if I was in your shoes I suppose I wouldn't be jealous either.

it won't be on carfax- infiniti doesn't submit anything to carfax. it will be in the cars service history though-not necessarily a negative on a 4+ year old car depending on when you sell it. when I hear about engine repairs I worry about the technicians expertise-especially if its a short block, now if its a complete engine from japan, different story.

^+1. I would worry about the rest of the car and why the engine had to be replaced in the first place.

I see that you have a 2006 FX35. I'm not sure if it is just a coincidence, but I'm seeing a lot of 2006 vehicles having this "ignition" problems. Again, the answer from the dealer is usually unclear and random. My problem (2006 FX35 AWD) finally resolved with the fuel pump being changed. However, I still do have a sluggish start in the morning when my headlight is on. Probably, I need a new battery. Anyway, it is just weird with 2006 vehicles... Do you guys agree or am I just being superstitious?

Actually I'm a bit jealous cuz I wish the stealership replaced my engine. Mine's also an '06 and I've been having similar problems with my ride. No turning over in low temp. Although it got much better after getting a new battery, it re-occurred after leaving the car parked for a few days. I'm starting to get a bit worried that it's a major problem but I'm hoping that the dealer can duplicate the problem and fix it before the warranty runs out this coming October! Please update us on how the engine swap goes.

I'll keep you guys updated. I do feel much more comfortable knowing that they're going to be replacing the entire thing rather then just bits and pieces. I didn't know there was such an issue with the '06 models.

The dealer was pretty cool about diagnosing the problem. They had the car for about a week before they were able to replicate it.

If I were a potential buyer, I'd think you were hard on the engine and thus offer you less money since other parts may have seen similar abuse. That is if I were an outsider.

So Update time.
After the new engine was installed we got the car back and within a day it was doing the same thing again. I'd turn the key and it would take forever to turn over and a couple of times it actually did die on me. So back to the dealership it went. They called me the other day to tell me they replaced a bunch of wiring and had everything sorted out and to come get it. The next morning I get a call from them telling me that they tried to test it out and that it didn't start AGAIN and not to bother coming to get it. So, today marks the 8th week since I initially dropped the car off at the dealer. I'm not really mad since I've had a G37x loaner. I'm actually viewing the whole thing as kind of humorous.

Really curious to see what it turns out being after all this:eek:

We tend to think of technicians from Japan as somehow better that the local guys.
In this case they have no idea of what the problem is. This stuff you would expect from the local remove and replace guys at the local gas station. Unbelievable.

Glad to see you are keeping your sense of humor:laugh:

Drive the F*&^ out of that G37!!! Roadtrip!?!? lol

It's actually a fun car to drive, especially in the snow.

I'm beginning to think that they're just going to start replacing things in the hopes that eventually they get the issue sorted out.

I think I'm able to keep my sense of humor simply because I've been treated so well by the service department. That being said I've ALWAYS been treated well by Infiniti's service people. Both at the dealer that I used when I lived in Phoenix and the one in Rochester have had a "customer is always right" attitude.

its good that the service dept is treating you well and taking care of you. With these kinds of problems, good service goes a long way. Hope all end up well. Maybe if they can't fix it, they'll replace the whole car next!

I think this constitutes a lemon ! If they have to start replacing entire engines,
wiring , fuel systems etc. it's time to admit there's an elephant in the house !!
New or at least replacement car time , not just a piece at a time . Don't let
your patience rule out a fair settlement on this, the next guy is going to get
the same lame excuses and treatment .
