Weird Start...

Normally, when I start the car, the car's RPM would shoot up to2.0 to 2.5k and drop right away to 1kish

Unlike my normal start, during the initial start, the RPM sort of hesitated... it went to 1.5k, hesitate a bit (felt like it was going to stall) and then go up to the normal point and drop.

Any thoughts on what it can be?

When I cranked the car last time(about a week ago), It took a little struggle to start her up to and I knew that was the battery. I haven't changed the battery since I bought the car in April of 2006.

This situation is a different feeling tho.

Thoughts would be appreciated.

How many mile does you baby have?

It could be a number of things... Yet you batter should not be the reason why your baby should start and idle bellow 2K RMPS.

It could be that you might just have a dirty filter, dirty Throtle Body or bad spark plugs...

Also check you air filters..

Nevertheless, this would be the place to start. Next thing to do is to make sure to be up to date with your maintenance..

New Cerpentine belts... etc...

Having the same problem with my FX, though only on the first start of the day. Asked on here about it a few weeks ago and people were thinking a dirty throttle body, just haven't had time to take a look. Giving it a bit of gas at start-up takes care of it for me.

Idle air control valve?

Anyways, my car has done the same thing from the very beginning. Not only on the first start of the day. Anytime I go to start it after being off for about ~15 mins.

Stalled on me right after start up twice. So now I do the gas blip thing.

I wonder if this is why German cars set to give the car a blip of gas on start up.

Ok... I cranked the car up this morning, shut it off and cranked it again couple of time. I did it about 6 times and 4 out of 6 times had the same symptom. I will try cleaning the filter today and see if it happens. I will get to spark plugs during my break. I hope the filter cleaning will help... although it doesn't look too dirty (K&N)

So you never figured out what it was?

I would at least do a visual check of the throttle body while you are at it, like others have mentioned. if you see black build up, then the TB might be sticking of not able to close/open all the way.

(*maybe after all this, you will finally feel the +2 mod )

yeah, def sounds like a dirty throttle body... if it sees often full throttle runs that will cause it to get dirty sooner too, I just did mine ~ over a year ago & I can feel that it is again dirty... exactly what your discribing...

I stopped getting lazy and tried to fix it today. After taking the filter off. I noticed it was extremely dirty. I cleaned the hell out f the thing and now the car is acting normal again. I think it was pretty clogged up with crap the car wasn't breathing all that well.

mine was starting and hesitating once it fired up - and it was all due to the battery - which was replaced on mine and eliminated the problem. if the battery is going bad, there isn't enough juice once it fires up to get it going, so to speak.

does it kinda hesitate (or at least sound like you're running a monster camshaft) for about 2-3 seconds or so and then idle normally? if so, it's your battery.

Well the filter cleaning didn't work. I guess I have to take off my intake and look at the TB.

I thought it was the battery, but it starts up fine.

Under normal conditions, RPM would shoot up to 2k and come back down to normal idle. Currently, it goes up to 1.5k hesitates to climb any further for good second or two, and shoot up to 2k and come down to normal idle.

Does it sound like the battery? I have't changed it for good 3 years and 8 months. Probably easier to change battery instead of taking the intake apart.

that's exactly what it sounds like to me. that's what mine is doing now. i'm going tomorrow to get a new battery.

i wouldn't try to clean out your throttle or anything until you swap the battery out.... especially since you started this thread saying that you think you need a new battery.

oh.... and even if it starts up "fine" lower cranking amperage will cause this to happen. it's enough to fire up the engine but for the first few seconds, the battery isn't firing it up 100% - my terminology is a bit off but hopefully you get the point. even though it turns over and starts, i'll bet it cranks a few seconds before it fires up. with a new/ fully charged/good battery, it should fire up instantly.

lmk. hope this helps.

inspecting the TB isnt that hard ... just remove the intake tube (a couple hose clamps) and inspect. you have a 06 that should be under warranty still ..... i would go that route and have the dealer check you battery while they are at it. get a loaner for a day or so

I m curious also with changing your battery chifx45, but please post your results like Andrew mentioned.
Im just skeptical because once your car starts, doesnt your alternator kick in to supply the proper amp/volt?!

im thinking it hesitates possibly due to you flooding the engine during the starts.

if your air filter is that dirty, I agree with others that it is a dirty TB.

Interesting! Well, I had to change the throttle body, all 6 fuel injectors, and fuel pump because I had a long cranking before the engine turned over and the similar weird "hesitation" or "sluggish" start in the morning. All this happened when I was 51-54K miles. After the fix, my car is starting right away so far, but I'm still having that sluggish start in the morning. After the first start, my car starts fine. I would like to know if changing the battery would solve this problem. I do have some doubts that it is the battery, but at this point, I will try anything. ...By the way, it looks like you have a 2006 model just like me. Coincidence or something to think about with 2006 model?
