Ignition Problem!!!

I had this issue maybe 3 to 4 times but ended up being carbon in the throttle body. Usually happened after the car sitting in the garage for 2-3 days. TB got replaced by Infiniti, problems went away.

I'm wondering if the filter on the fuel pump is clogged...cuz we don't have a replaceable filter, its a permanent filter on the fuel pump so maybe there's dirty fuel?

Yah, you are right. Jerry from MV Infiniti said that the fuel filter is part of the fuel pump. So, when they have to change the fuel pump, they should be changing the fuel filter as well. I only use premium gas from Shell, Chevron, Mobile, and 76. I don't even go near generic gas stations. Anyway, this is one crazy stuff on Nissan V6 engine. I think this is more common than I thought. My 2003 Audi A4 1.8T Quattro had an engine issue, but it was just one...ignition coil, which is extremely easy to fix. Anyway, Infiniti/Nissan 3.5 V6 is something...throttle body, camshaft sensor, fuel pump, fuel injection,... I hope I'm not being too critical with Nissan. I do love driving my FX, but I really don't like this uncertainty about ignition issues. Anyway, have a wonderful Thanksgiving! I still haven't picked up my car yet.

Good thing you're getting all this done under warranty! I can't imagine paying for all this. Plus side is you're getting all new parts so you won't have to worry about any of these for a long time. I think the problem is going to be the fuel pump or something real simple and all those other parts were fine to start with, so it may not be soo bad afterall.

Hope you get it all resolved!! Have a Happy Thanksgiving!!

just because the dealer is changing all these parts, don't mean all these things are wrong with your fx... most likely you have one thing wrong & one problem... there just guessing wrong until now as to what that one problem is...

I got my car back today! I loved driving my FX back home instead of the loaner G37. G37 was nice and fast, but FX had the "feeling". I was wrong about the fuel filter. Jerry said that fuel filter is in the gas tank. The fuel pump has a "mesh sock" instead of a true filter. Whatever that is??? Anyway, they changed the fuel pump. They did not get any code for this. They just changed it since nothing took care of my problem. It started fine and drove nice. Now, I just need to check it out for next few days to several weeks to see if my problem is resolved. To summarize what has been done to my car: (1) changed throttle body, (2) changed all 6 fuel injections, and (3) fuel pump. I guess that covers most of the ignition system. If the problem persists, I have no clue and MV Infiniti has no clue. Any guess, guys? I had two types of problems (1) long cranking-usually 5-8 seconds before the engine turned over and (2) sluggish start in the morning with delayed rev then normalization of the engine noise. I hope my problems will help others figure out their problems. Good luck! Have wonderful holidays.

^^^ I have the same symptoms. Throttle body has been replaced and the problem is still there. I'll have them replace the fuel pump next.

It's been about 1 week since I picked up my car. So far, my car is starting fine. It doesn't take more than 2-3 seconds to start. Better than 5-8 seconds. However, in the morning, my car starts right away but it's a little sluggish with delayed rev (no more than 1 second delay). It starts with 1000-1100 RPM then 0.5-1 second later it rev's to 1800 RPM. Then, it goes down to 1100-1200 RPM in about 1 minute. It drives well..no vibration or hesitation while driving. Also, sometimes, my car starts right away but a little "rough"..my car shakes a little as if too much power when it started. After my car starts, the engine sounds good and feels good. My throttle body is new, all fuel injections are new, and fuel pump is new. Do you think I need to reprogram or retune my ECU or something? Any suggestions... I'm so tired of taking my car in and not having my car for 1 week. I'm thinking of contacting Jerry @ MV Infiniti to let him know what I told you guys.

Question regarding your delayed rev. What I'm experiencing is when I start my car it feels like it's going to stall but then the rpm picks up after about second. Feels like the idle control valve has issues but after the short blip it will idles correctly. I has stalled twice on start up but mostly its just the initial really low rpm. Is this similar to what you were experiencing?

Luckily, my car hasn't stalled at this point...knock on wood. When it starts, it's sluggish but RPM doesn't drop below 1000 RPM, which then in 1 second or less, engine rev's to 1800 RPM. Before I changed the throttle body, fuel injection, and fuel pump, my car was a lot more sluggish when it started. It would drop below 1000 RPM, then it would rev to 1800 RPM in 1-2 seconds. I thought it was from the throttle body, but I'm not sure at this time. I could live with this as long as it doesn't get any worse. Just the fact that it is starting right away...I am very happy. Maybe, I'm nitpicking here but definitely my car is not the same since 3-4 months ago.

Soooooo my car had issues this morning again starting up, it took me about 3 tries to get it start. Since the last time I posted I had replaced the battery and havent had the starting issue come back once, but this morning it had a tough time starting. The temp outside was the coldest its been so far which was 25 degrees. But even still I dont think that should have an affect on starting my car. I'm probably going to send my fx into the shop and try to have them put a new fuel pump in. mhkeyemd have you had any issues starting your fx at all since the fuel pump replacement? I know you said you're having a little idling issues but starting wise any issues.

I'm sorry to hear that your car is acting up again. So far, my car is starting up right away (taking less than 2-3 seconds to start). It's only been 1 week since I picked up my car, so I don't want to be premature with my final judgment here. I'm still not convinced until my car behaves for at least 1 month (just being careful here with my FX history). Also, the "sluggish" start appears to be improving or at least less frequent. I feel like a witch doctor trying to figure out this weird sluggish start. At least, the sluggish start is much better than before. It doesn't feel too weak to stall. It just has a small delayed rev without any vibration or puffing. Maybe, my ECU is "adjusting"...I'm just guessing here. Good luck with your fix! Make sure the guy you work with is a reasonable and knowledgeable guy. I wasn't lucky at Tustin Infiniti until I went to Mission Viejo.

1800 rpm, 1 min after start up? It seems high to me. Mine starts up at 1400 and then drop to 1200 within 30 secs and then dropped to 1100 ~ 1000 after 1 ~ 2 mins. I used to use 92 octant, now 94 after the +2 mod. I guess it is probably because of the grade of the fuel?

mhkeyemd, just checking back to see if your fx is still starting up fine and everything after the fuel pump replacement.

Yes, so far, my car is starting up fine. It takes no more than 2-3 seconds to start ever since my fuel pump has been changed. Also, I figured out the sluggish start in the morning. Once I turned off the headlight before starting in the morning, it starts strong! I think my battery needs to be changed sometime soon. Have you stopped by the dealer for your problem?

Glad your issue is solved but I still have the starting issue sometimes, not as much as before but every here and there. Mostly when my car sits for a full 24 hours or more in the freezing New England weather up here. Yes I did bring my fx to the dealership and told them the whole thing about it having issues starting and that I bought a brand new battery and it went away for a little while but now its back. After I dropped it off about 3 hours later I received a phone call from them saying that the battery I bought was wrong and that our cars are very finicky and that they need an infiniti battery. I was thinking in my head that a car battery is a car battery. I made sure that it had the same if not more cold cranking amps and what not, so I think that he was just trying to get me to buy their 240.00 dollar battery. I also told them about how another person had the same issue as me and the infiniti dealership replaced his fuel pump and the issue went away. So Im thinking until I buy their battery theyre not going to do anything with my fx. So right now Im still stumped. I F-ing hate dealerships. Any ideas.

One thing I learned about dealerships is that they will find an excuse to not honor their warranty. I will try a different dealer if you have other choices. I had to change to a different dealer to fix my problems. Also, your original battery had 7 year warranty, so they would have changed it with some prorated cost to you if you had changed it now (that is if they thought it was not good). I'm wondering if it is due to your cold weather... Good luck.

Well, it happened again today in front of my daughter's daycare! It just cranked without turning over. I have no idea anymore! After it didn't start after 30 seconds to 1 minute of cranking, I got out and locked & unlocked car with the keyfob. Then, I entered and restarted my car, which then started right away. I think I just have to live with this. I had my battery, throttle body, fuel injectors, and fuel pump changed so far. I'm returning next month for 60K mile maintenance check. I will probably change the spark plugs on that visit. Man, any ideas????

Sorry your still experiencing this problem months later mhk! I have been very fortunate not to have that issue yet or any mechanical one. But when I read the first page of posts, it seems like only people with '06 models are having this issue. I remember watching a video on youtube where a guy couldnt start his car too. It was an '06 at the very oldest.

Actually heres the link for the video:
