intake kit on its way

I went to a local hardware store and bough a single piece of thin bar stock steel. Now whenever I need a custom bracket, I hack off a peice and bend it to the right shape, drill some holes for mounting and then paint it black. At the very least it looks like it belongs there. Here's one I made for the Stillen heat shield. Same thing could be made using the same mounting location, except going to one of the four bolts that holds the MAF.

are you SERIOUS with those ZIPTIES?

you drive a luxury vehicle you couldn't splurge to buy a real intake? I mean with the 45 dollars you could have bought just the k&n filter and have been better off. but hey, if oyu want to buy cheap stuff for your FX be my guest. All im saying is this isnt a honda lol

There is an ebay intake with a K & N for $60 shipped...that doesnt seem like a bad deal

It's not a Ferrari either. While ugly, those zipties are functional. Although I wouldn't have gone that route since the eBay intake comes with a mounting bracket, it does work.

The intake will work about as well as a Fujita or any other filter on a stick intakes. They're all drawing air from the same spot. Stillen is a different story as at least it has a heat shield. Even then, the hp gains between all intakes is pretty similar. If a $45 intake works similarly to a $250 intake, great.

FWIW, I've seen Hondas with way more money in them than just about any FX (excluding Rookie). I've also seen BMW's and Mercedes with some of the most rigged/home made parts imaginable. It goes both ways; as long as the part works and the owner likes it, more power to him. An FX isn't any more special than a Honda, nor is it less special than a Porsche.

Let's all agree to disagree. A Honda is less special than a Porsche. Your definition of "special" is VERY different than most of ours it seems

LMS definitely got the intake design right on the first shot... the LMS CAI is even compatible with the stock air box if you cut it open to fit a cone filter...

My point was that a car is just a car. None of them are really that special except maybe your ultra rare ones. Porsches are dime a dozen around here. 7 out of the 30 cars parked on my level of the parking lot of my loft are Porsches. Would I take a Porsche over a Honda? Any day of the week. But people always seem to denigrate Hondas as cheap or a lesser car. An FX is just an upscale Nissan; we're not talking about Bentleys.

I bought an FX because I've always liked it. I didn't get it as some sort of status symbol. I could have bought a Cayenne Turbo, or I could have gotten a Honda CRV instead, neither car is better nor worse than the FX if they suit my needs. That was my entire point. I've never understood people that elevated their cars to some sort of "special" status.

So let's just agree to disagree:biggrin:

I've already suggested that! Your opinion on what's considered "special" is its status appeal apparently... I could care less about status, I own a $37k Mitsubishi... the only Mitsubishi more expensive than mine is the "auto" transmission option, yet they're still just Mitsubishis (amazing/special Mitsubishis might I add).

Anyways, Kakes, give it a shot and just compare pictures (like the one on the eBay auction and the one deaner provided) and see if you can figure it out. You WILL need to use the silicone couplers and clamps to install this tube. If it ends up not being as straight-forward as everyone here's telling you, feel free to come back in with pictures of what's going wrong and we'll easily be able to help from there.

its easy bro.. i have the same one.

heres a pic

very throaty and deeeep sound when u open her up.. test it out bro.. i love it

how muc? i paid 45 including shipping. great deal.

Yo Deaner-Takin' some heat for the zip ties, sorry man. Easy enough to get a piece of strapping aluminum from the Depot, drill out one end the size of your bolt on the MAF tube connector, then run it over to the smaller of the two holes on your fender well. Drill out the other end to match the fender hole size, make sure it all lines up and you have a solid mount (maybe a little bending involved). Find an SS metal screw (be cool if you could find a plastic plug bolt so you don't get any rust) to run into the smaller of the two holes your tie is running through and screw it in, if you like you can use a file to clean up your strap.

Or say screw it and go with what you have, if it works and doesn't move around too much in there-WTH!

The tube, coupler, and filter look good. It's just the zip ties that does it in. Do what Logan said and go to HD, get some metal straps and fab up something that looks better.

I'm sure Deaner didn't mean this to be his permanent installation. He probably just hasn't gotten around to "fixing" it due to the fact the zip ties work for now.

you're right toy4x, ziptied the tube as light became dim and it simply works as of now. Haven't had much time to get around to upgrading from zipties.

I think his mistake was posting it as "look at what I did" ....

I didn't mean to post it as that, just trying to help out a fellow fxer with the same intake.

yes baker, i am very serious. It is an fx, not a honda. BUT the zipties DO work and are sturdy enough without any FAILURE jb. So, I'm good. AWARD GOES TO THE FELLA FORM THE NORTHEAST! JBAAAAAKER!

thanks for some back up.. the bracket it came with im guessing was meant for a g or 350 czue it did not fit anywhere on the bay.. even with bending.

ALSO, WHAT EVER HAPPENED "TO EACH, HIS OWN" I've seen that plenty of times coming from you jb, why the hate??

deanerhr ... thank you for the post !! sorry it caused ya a bit of a raz-n from the fellow members .
you guys are on top of it as a group i was floored at how many post my topic created . iv got a cpl pics on photo bucket but i think we cleared the air about what the hose on the intake tube was so they are irrelevant @ this point. but thank you all for the support ! install should be tomorrow if ups comes thru :)

yeah I say "to each his own" usually about a specific mod: for example i'll say NOT to get an ebay kit but if somebody gets it and it looks alright and they are fine with it, then to each his own. Like the fact you got an ebay intake isnt the issue.
My issue is when people use stuff like zipties on for example; the intake for the vehicle.
since you got such a good deal on the intake maybe you should spend a little extra on a real way to mount it. or you could have spent a little extra to get one that is able to be mounted and doesnt just hang there.....

and nobody is elevating the FX to the same status as porsches or bentleys. All i meant by saying its not a honda is you dont go around ziptying engine parts together. it reminds me of my friend who couldnt get his lip kit for his g37s (brand new) to fit so he used like a black epoxy/chalk and woodscrews to make it fit. i mean, if the homemade appeal is so important to you so be it.
besides my exhaust, which is a whole different issue, all the mods I have have alot of research behind them to find the best one, got quality to get it right, took my time if i installed it myself, etc.
I didn't just hop on ebay saying "lets get some performance parts for my fx" a used stillen ztube intake with k&n would give you more gains than your ebay intake, and you could have probably found one for a tiny bit more than you payed.
and maybe we're in the same boat considering that alot of vehicles in my own town consist of all the luxury brands, multiple ferraris, bentleys, a few lambos, you name it. and yes, there are fxs everywhere but nobody mods them or anything. I got the fxx when i was 17 and i could have been like any other teenage modder/ricer and just thrown parts on, bought cheap rims, chopped up my exhaust to make it loud, throw a big ugly sub box in the back and call it a day: but no, i take my time doing research, i make sure i get the right part (again, besides my exhaust which is a nismo but ended up getting what i payed for due to rust etc.) and sometimes i feel that people should do the same.
I know the older fx's are starting to get really cheap but that doesnt mean they should be modded that way. but hey, to each his own right?
Maybe there are different types of modders out there and we are in different categories, but whatever we are all part of the infiniti scene.

and yes, i am notorious for being the guy to help you out getting/installing a part and then making fun of it right afterwards. sorry. maybe take the advice and go buy a piece of metal for $5 at home depot and atleast make a bracket to mount the intake correctly, and while youre at it maybe buy another peice of metal and make a heatshield so the intake doesnt suck in all the engien heat:also try to make it line up right between the top of the grill and the hood because there is a tiny inlet there for air to come in and thats where the stillen intake it set to take air from.
it will take you less time than it took you to find the intake on ebay.
also just saying, I wasn't the only one hating on the zipties.
good luck
