'03 FX35 over heating...

knocking on wood now... replaced the radiator cap and now the coolant must have transferred back to the radiator after everything cooled down because no signs of it in the engine bay. and coolant level in expansion tank is back to normal (around max). been driving around and all seems normal.

ok its oct 18, & 10months after i did my first pour of kseal into my radiator -i finally had an overheat issue today. surprisingly the fx was great for 10 months with one $13 pour of kseal -this means im going to get my cooling system flushed this week & then do another pour.

todays overheat could be due to drastic cold weather or aggressive driving or just broke the seal that lasted 10months. -either way kseal is great.

How does this keep happening to a lot of FX35 ranging from 2003-2005 and still yet no one can say exactly what the cause is and how in gods name was this not mentioned on ANY online reviews? Who knew my VW would end up being my reliable vehicle.

Its the head gasket. FX OG knows this, but doesn't want to change it. Popular theory is that the thermostat goes first, then the first overheat cycle takes out the HG.

Its not a common issue at all. A more accurate description would be "extremely rare".

Is the head gasket the issue in most of the FX35's that keep overheating cause it keeps happening to mine too. They replaced the radiator the first time exactly one week later again with the overheat. Sad thing is I just bought it Sept 17th :bad:

Its the most common cause. One overheater was cured by a replaced thermostat, and one was cured by a new radiator. The assumption is that overheating for any reason will blow the head gasket, which will then continually cause the engine to overheat.

Ah ok well they are supposedly replacing the thermostat now so I guess we'll see how that goes. I''m hoping like crazy its not the head gasket, i've heard some not so good things about having to replace them.

My FX35 has been at the dealership for 2 weeks now. They sent it to the dealership today because they were unable to determine what the cause of the overheat is.....at this point i'm pretty sure whatever it is, its not good. Here's to hoping they'll pay for whatever it is thats causing this considering I bought the car Sept. 17th and i've had it in my posession a total of 3 weeks.

Ok so after the dealership determined it was a blown head gasket they decided that even if they fixed it, it may not stop the over heating and I should get a new motor....ha guess who's going back to the dealership.

That's a clever way of saying "I don't trust the lackeys I employ to put an engine back together properly so I'm going to pass the buck to Infiniti."

Are you paying for this work?

UPDATE: for anyone who is still curious - if you read throughout this thread you will see that i have been dealing with a blown head gasket for a few years & 40,000 miles. today i am at 160,000 miles & continue to drive with a blown head gasket. i was using kseal for a few years but that seal eventually breaks depending on driving habits. these days there seems to be a lot more variety on products for blown head gaskets. i am now using "Bar's Leaks HG-1 Head Gasket and Cooling Sealant", even after rough driving various climate changes & red lining the seal has held up. *Note that i never let RPM meter go past 4rpm's in the past since blown gasket & i was unable to park on a downhill engine facing down -now these things don't matter. They say the product has carbon fiber particles that help make it work. The HG1 cost around $30 on amazon, i kept car in the cold for about 8hours, then opened radiator & poor'd half the 33oz bottle into the radiator. Then i turned on the car & allowed the thermostat to reach optimal temps without driving -after that happened i shut off car & waited for it to get cold again. hours later i came back and turned on car drove at 2rpms for 20-25mins, went back home & it sat overnight. ever since this point the seal has held up & i am glad to share this product here on the forum.

Hi... followed the entire debacle about the overheating, etc. with much interest, since my '04 FX35 with 110,000 is following a similar pattern. So far dealer has replaced a supposedly stuck thermostat, checked for exhaust gas contamination, flushed system, pressured checked, and declared everything good as new. 2K miles later overflow reservoir is almost full again, and gurgling sounds coming from behind the dash. Oh... and no overheating according to engine temp gauge. I have the feeling I'm heading down the same road you have recently travelled. Wondering, was the $3600 repair the Infiniti price, or from a private garage/mechanic? Thanks for sharing your painful experiences. Hope the new parts have made your FX better than new.

Regards,

Ron

I was told that my 2010 FX35 with 174K miles (by my trusted mechanic) that i have a blown head gasket but its not a severe one, so i poured a bottle of K seal ultimate, until i can get a good quote for a head gasket replacement. Wish me luck!
