'03 FX35 over heating...

yes it was, HEAD GASKET. - im not really looking to spend big money on the vehicle, because it has so many miles on it already, it all depends on the cost -if i was able to fix it under 2k i probably would....other than that ill ride this til it dies & get a new car if needed....

Just to be uber clear; It was the head gasket the whole time, right?

what are the chances that Nissan/Infiniti will issue some sort of recall/tsb or that someone will have a class action lawsuit for the head gasket issue? I paid $3k to have mine fixed on a car with 80k miles. I have since gotten rid of Murano with the issue, but I am holding out hope that I will get a letter in the mail that says "Nissan has extended the warranty on head gaskets for 8 years, 100k miles."

there are soo many factors that come into play with head gaskets that unless it is a design flaw, I dont think that they would back it up. I know acura tl's have a tranny problem but all they did to fix the problem was offer a extended warranty but there isn't a fix. I just bought a used one for a commuter and I am crossing my fingers nothing goes wrong, luckily I bought the 99 with 4 speed instead of the one I really wanted (5 speed); but those are more troublesome. hopefully they can issue you some cash back.

I've always considered head gaskets a maintenance item. It is after all a GASKET. In my experience, you look for tell tale signs of their demise (like ALL of the symptoms in this thread) and you replace them as needed. I am still baffled by the utter incompetence of the "techs" in this unfortunate saga. Had they pulled their heads out of their asses and replaced the head gasket 6 months ago, Infiniti would have saved a ton of time and money, and FX OG might not need a new engine right now...

so i am one of the very unfortunate people to be having an overheating issue with my 05' fx35 as well. i was on my way home last night when i noticed engine temp light redlining. shortly after, my gas wasnt accelerating the vehicle (a safety measure by the ECU im assuming.) I quickly pulled over and had smoke/steam billowing from my engine and when i went to pop the hood noticed all my coolant had expelled onto the ground. MY FX HAS 82,000 MILES ON IT. reading these forums are making me scared out of my mind because im only 21 and i spend almost my entire paycheck on my car. im way strapped on cash and cant be affording to spend money on parts that dont need replacing so im really hoping someone can give me advice. anyhow i got home from work today and refilled the radiatior and reservoir with water to see if i could find any gravitational leaks (did not do pressure test because i dont have the tools.) and i couldnt see anything. Then i proceeded to Follow instructions by my dealer I try to reproduce the overheating effect by reving my engine to 2500rpm and allowing the engine to heat to its normal operating temperature and everything was running fine except a few small noises i have not heard before "water sloshing." If anyone can just please explain to me how often they have it occur? do you wait for it to cool down and drive it again? i dont know what first steps to take, theres so many things (water pump, thermostat, radiator and/or radiator cap, pin hole leak in the head gasket???? and the people that work at my local beaverton infiniti shop here in oregon sound worthless like how everyone else on this thread describes theres to be

Can anyone with the 05' fx35 tell me if replacing the head gasket ever actually resolved this issue?! I'm having the same exact problem and don't want to be spending money or dealing with dealerships that I don't have to. Thank you so much

I have the same exact issue on my '03 FX35 and will be trying some of that K-Seal to try and seal my head gasket or whatever else is there. I will report here the results. The stuff should be here tomorrow.

The issue is sporadic for me. 1st time it happened was this past winter, 2nd time while I was doing 80mph on the highway (!!!) - engine simply cut out, and last time was last Friday duting very moderate driving to the local farm.

The only thing I've done so far is replace a thermostat. My car has 101K and I simply WILL NOT be paying some dumba$$ Infiniti mechanic to try and diagnose this.

This is unbelievable for a 40K car!!!

While I love my FX, I think we will have to part our ways soon. It's been a regular kids' hauler, but now I can't rely on it at all with these overheating/expansion tank bubbles issues...

Does the z,g35 have this same problem as well???

I figure - same engine, same problem. I have read a ton on this issue since I care about my cars a lot and it seems very sporadic, different years/models. And for this reason Infiniti is reluctant to recognize this as an issue and wants nothing to do with it - not exactly the care you'd expect.

I also own a '07 G35X and had a leaking lower radiator hose once @ 22K - also unacceptable for, supposedly, luxury cars. This was fixed but now I always have this in the back of my mind.

Another problem on G is with revs/transmission mapping - it gets confused at exactly 40mph, but this discussion is for a diff. thread.

don't get me wrong, I LOOOOVE this puppy. I think the '03 design was way ahead of its time.

Matter of fact, just last weekend I had 2 women get out of the car as I was pulling out of the convenience store parking lot. They stopped me and complemented me on the 'beautiful brand new Infiniti' I drove :)

If they could only know that this car is 8 years old and has overheating issues...

I would take it to an import specialists shop or nissan. I've learned that infiniti dealers learn as they go on each car with their individual problems.

Wow cant believe this is happening so often nowadays, i still have the problem but ive learned to live with it, first i never hyper-rev my engine from 0-60 or 20-45 or anything involving burst from my engine, especially when there will be numerous stops (red lights/stop signs), i keep it under 2.5rpm's generally, & on highway i slowly make my way to 85-90mph. i never park on a hill especially on a hill where the engine chassis is pointing down towards hill. If i keep my car on while a quick out of car stop like picking dry cleaners or something, i lower the a/c all the way down, may even turn it off. Sometimes when your engine is in process of overheating and is about to hit that line, it may actually be good to rev minor, immediately youll hear swishing in dash & the heat meter will dip almost immediately. Worst is when its already overheating & your in city traffic/very slow moving traffic, i recommend you avoid that completely or just stay pulled over, usually when its overheated in traffic & meter at top, unlikely it will come down unless you turn off or reach 60mph speeds, slowly of course. Thats how i live with my FX.

man if i had to live with all those restricitons on my ride I would get rid of it or get it fixed, because constant overheating eventhough it is protected will definitely not being able to recover. i remember caddy's had problems and then with the northstar engine 4.6 it is designed to shut down before damage, even with no water in the radiator.

man... i'm experiencing this overheating prob now at 160k miles. pressure tested fine, fan works,... replaced the thermostat and the prob went away for almost 1000k miles but its now back.

oh man...this sound very similar to my murano 05 murano that i traded in for my fx... my murano actually ran for about 30
minutes without any problem and then all of a sudden the whole car stops revving.... like it does not cut off or shut off but
even if i puch the acc/pedal the rpm is at a stand still.... i mean i din have nay oveheating bursting of fluids but on a hot days
the car overheat requiring me to shut my engine off during city traffic and once on highway if i drive it fast enough
then it cools right back down.... so i just traded that fuxxr in without even touching it ....... hope my new fx does not
do that....
