+2 Mod - Loan Program

I want to do the +2 mod on my FX but I contacted two dealerships and both gave me two different answers with two different prices....

Oakville states that its advancing the timing by 2 degrees plus setting the values correctly on the idle and what not so all supporting specs work with the 2 degrees. Charge 1.5 hours of work.

Guelph is stating all it is just advance by 2 degrees, or 3 at most and voila! 1 hour of work.

Either they know how to do it or not and if they want to charge you through the nose as Merchant said try a Nissan dealer it's a simple 10-15 minute procedure...

From an old write up-

[FONT=Verdana, Helvetica, Arial]This refers to advancing your stock timing. Stock timing on an FX35 is +15 BTDC (as per underneath the hood, driver's side label) and FX45 is +12 BTDC. Timing bump changes this to +17 and +14, respectively. What does this mean? This means that the spark plug will fire EARLIER in the cycle, causing a more complete fuel/air burn since there's more time allowed for the ignite. You'll have some gains from this, but you'll lose 1 mpg (worthy trade-off in my opinion). The down-side is knock/ping. If you do this, you MUST use 91 or 93 octane gas (which you should anyways, the extra 20 cents per gallon only costs you $100-150 extra per year on avg and saves your engine of knock and gives you increased power and fuel economy, which makes up for some of the extra cost you pay). This timing bump must be done by a tool called the "Consult" or a program on a laptop with appropriate OBD-II/USB cable. A Nissan or Infiniti dealer can do this for you, and it is recommended to speak with a tech instead of a manager. If you speak with a tech while getting serviced or at the dealer for any reason for your car, you might be able to get him to do this for free, since it is a 5 minute plug-n-play procedure. Ask that they advance your timing 2 degrees, but make sure they know you want it +14 or +17 total (+12+2=+14 and +15+2=+17), and not +2 or you'll get horrible power loss (honda-civic-style-power).

I didn't have any other work going on so I talked my service manager into doing mine for 50.00. The guy who they first roped into it scratched his head for awhile then another tech came over and hammered it out in....15 minutes.

Thanks for the input guys, its true either they know or don't know but what ticks me off is Oakville is an approved Stillen dealership to do crazy mods and first one to do a turbocharged 350Z but they never did that +2 on an FX? I must call BS! to that.

I wish i had access to a consult 2 or someone that does and just pay them, it can't be that hard to do a timing advance.

I always use premium and when I get the +2, for the summer I'll use 94 octane due to the higher ambient temp.

Which disk? the program to change the timing or the FX service manual stating how to do it? If its the program to change it, care to share that? :.smile:

It only takes 1 min actually :smile: Anybody charging anything over 15 mins for this is ripping you off..

The disk he's mentioning is Cipher. It's a diagnostic software that comes with a cable and you can advance/retard timing by +/- 2 degrees using a laptop. I used to loan it but sold it a while ago..
 
Ya I was reading your earlier posts where you were debating on selling or loaning it haha man I wish I knew someone here that has it...

Apparently someone dynoed before and after the mod and only gained 1hp and 2.3 ft/lbs torque but I would still like to get it since I'm sure any power is worth the hassle.

Is the Cipher program designed to only work with the cable it comes with? I'm wondering if I bought a cable off eBay, usb to ODB2 and "Borrowed" the app, would it work...seeing as no one around here has one....yet

Yeah saw that dyno but my butt told me otherwise when I did it. Also, I don't understand how can you gain basically nothing when the question in place is a timing advance. Even in minimal amounts and even without adjusting the AF ratio, it should give you more power. The immediate stuff that I felt was a better throttle response and better power at the low rpm range..

I believe it's the same cable but it might not work at all as well. Saying that because I remember reading a post from UpREV that said the cipher cable won't work with the Osiris software. There might be some differences..
 
I'll find my dyno's and post them up, since I don't think I ever did.
And I say 5-10 minutes, because when I did it, the guy restarted the car and ran it again to make sure it held the +2.
 
I have one but I need some kind of insurance policy to make sure I get it back. I do not mind but I need to make sure that I don't duked!!!! I trust you guys but how should we do this! any suggestions is welcomed.

When I did it, I asked for a deposit that gets refunded at the end of the loan. I'd pay for shipping and the receiver would pay for the shipping back. Use paypal, place in some rules and it should be good.
 
good plan i'm in..

also instead of doing it individually, if a IS member is getting it, maybe he/she can look around and post it up so Members from the same area/state or near by states can do it as a group..

just a thought...

if i get it i will post it up and see if anyone around DMV or any closer stay want to meet up and get it done..
