black tail lights

Most people have painted them or tinted them. few threads out there

tinting is very hard and not as dark as paint.. i painted mine.. if u dont now how take them to a body paint car shop theyll do it and doesnt cost alot..

The edges and angles of our tails make it harder to spray or tint, I have tried both vht and tint. My best option was letting a professional do them (caskyline) and now they are perfect. Just gotta bite the bullet on this type of a project and let an autobody shop take care of them or unless you are turbocad.

VHT Niteshade is a tinting paint that works well and is as easy as using spray paint. Apply more coats for a darker finish. But you can go too dark and block all light from coming through. It's easy to remove with acetone if you screw up. the acetone doesn't damage the lens housing.

Can anything be done after VHT to return the gloss? Reason I ask is I have new tailights for the Evo in the mail and I plan on opening up the stock tails, painting 'em black, and then doing a light shade of VHT because the lens is tinted pink. I've seen a pair of tails where they sprayed 1 light coat of VHT on to get rid of the pink look and it turned out great but I didn't notice it turning them dull.

Can a glossy clearcoat solve that problem, or maybe some good buffing?

That is the best way to get them done, by painting them. I got a spray gun, so I ended up taking them off the car which made it easier to get even coverage on both taillights, backing lights, and even the reflectors. In order to get them tinted, you have to add a little black to the clearcoat mix. I ended up using a red candy paint with black toner to darken.

The vht nightshade is the cheapest way to go followed by some clearcoat aerosol, a bodyshop will most likely want to charge $80-$140. The paint I bought was only $10
