Ok, I seriously need some help here. A couple weeks ago I noticed this black spot on one of my front rims. I tried getting it off but it would'nt come off at all. Now there are more!!!! and still not coming off. I have no idea what these spots are. I tried using a fine wire brush to get them off thinking it would scrape away whatever it is and it did a TINY bit but made the spots spread even more. I figured if some came off I could get the rest off but it kept spreading instead. The first pic I have have shown, the worst one, is the one i worked on today and the circles where not there before. I kept trying to get it off and it just got bigger and bigger until I gave up, and now have these horribly ugly looking spots on my wheels.

Can someone please help me or tell me WHAT these spots are and HOW i can possibly get them off. They are driving me crazy and look soo ugly.

Here are pics of what I'm talking about......PLease help...they are only on the front two wheels if that means anything???

It looks like tar. I would try some paint thinner. Put a drop of the paint thinner on a soft cloth and rub gently at first. If it starts coming off you can rub a little harder but you don't want to take the clear coat off the wheel. Give it a try and see how it goes.

Aright Doc I'll try the paint thinner tomorrow,

gto - I thought the same thing at first but some of it did come off, but for every bit that came off twice as much showed up. Plus I doubt the rims were originally black. Sorry about the placement.

Any other ideas..???

It does look like you rubbed through the paint in that one place. Hard to tell from pics versus actually looking at the wheel though.

Maybe the clear is rubbed off. Now it's picking up dirt. Can you sand it clean, then just clear those areas?

Crap, I really hope I didnt rub the paint off! I guess I could try to sand it then clear it but I dont really know how to do it. Even though its probably just how it sounds. Im gonna try the paint thinner tomorrow and if that doesnt work then i dont know. The oval spots in the first two pics where not there before i tried getting it off and I have not drivin it since i did that.

My vote is that you used too harsh a wheel cleaner at one point in time and it damaged the paint. I think the paint has worn off the rim in those spots. I am afraid you will have to have it refinished. I hope I'm wrong.

Well that would not be good, how much does that cost? I really dont think the paint is coming off but i could be wrong, the wheel cleaner I use is not very strong at all. If I did mess up the paint it was with the stupid brush i was using.

I had some problems like that. I used Mothers mag and wheel polish. It was not easy but after rubbing and rubbing the black marks or spots came off.

Did the spots spread at all before you were able to get them off. This is reassuring, maybe i should try this method first to try to avoid damaging the wheels

The good news is that the wheel is already messed up. No harm in trying a more aggressive polish. If you need to refinish it shouldn't be more than $100 per wheel. There are a lot of mobile refinishers that can do the work without taking off the tire.

That's not black on the paint. That's black under the paint. The top coat on Infiniti wheels is thin and can be damaged easily with harsh cleaners. Your only option is to repaint the rims because scrubbing will make it worse.

I experienced it on my G35 rims and 350Z rims. When I had a 350Z rim refinished, the repair guy had to san it down a little and there were several layers of alternating silver and black paint, as shown in your first two photos. I'm not sure what the purpose of the black paint if for unless it's a primer.

There is a TSB about it. http://x.infinitihelp.com/forum/local_links.php?action=jump&catid=81&id=536

no question the paint is gone in that spot, the rings are showing the layers below the paint...

O man, yea i have tried getting it off for the past couple days with no success so you guys must be right. Turbo, how much would you charge to fix up the front two rims? Is repainting my only option?

repainting is your only option, if you want to do 2 & match the other 2 your better off with a place like wheelsamerica or something, they have a place in LI, around $125 a wheel or so, I'd have a hard time matching the 2 to the other 2 originals..
