Comprehensive coverage insurance question

I bought my FX used recently and there are some nice scratches on the driver side that Im considering having it repainted. I spoke with my insurance and they said I can pay the comprehensive deductible and they will take care of the rest. Sounds fair enough. My question is by going through the insurance instead of paying out of my pocket all together, is my premium going to be affected? Second, what if anything will show up on car fax history report for example if i were to have the door repainted?

Incorrect. Only if you are 'at fault' and your insurance pays will you generally receive a premium increase.

I have had 2 car claims this year: A theft ($12K, obviously someone else's doing), and my Apt gate closing on it (2.5K, not my fault).

I just received my renewal info, and my premium is lower. If I had creamed someone, and I was at fault my premium would likely go up or they would drop my coverage.

Yes, anytime you use your insurance they will increase your premiums.
That's based on my experience.

I had a comprehensive claim on my previous car (~7-9k damage i think) and my premiums never went up. It was my fault but was a single car accident, I hit a pole.

however, when I switched insurance companies recently, I think my rate would have been lower if the comprehensive loss claim was not on my record. I believe it stays on your record for 5 years or so.

I'd just pay out of pocket. You'll have to pay a deductible anyway.

Painting the door should not show up on Carfax, especially if you don't go through your insurance.

Be careful about that. Even not at fault incidents can be used to raise your premium. They don't do so directly, but will use them to raise your "risk classification". It's not a policy that is consistently applied across the board, but it does happen. I used to have Ameriprise (American Express back in the day) and never had an at fault claim.

Last year, I reported a hit and run and then when it came time for my renewal, they had raised my rates 20%. When I called to ask why, they told me that although the hit and run didn't count against me directly, it was the 3rd "incident" they had on file so they moved me from a preferred risk class to standard and my rates went up. Here were the other 2 incidents they counted; back in '06 I was rear ended and of course the other guys insurance paid and I made no claim with Ameriprise. But since there was a police report and so on, Ameriprise put it on file. And the one that upset me the most was back in 1997, my wife was hit in a parking lot accident. Other car was at fault and cited and their insurance paid. Ameriprise actually counted that one.

Needless to say, I switched insurance companies immediately when I found out all of this. And to the OP, filing a claim to paint a door isn't going to be a great idea. After you've paid your deductible, you haven't really saved much money and the insurance company will have a claim on file. Generally I'd try to avoid claims as much as possible. Let insurance take care of the big stuff.

My recent experience is homeowners, but Allstate is Allstate. We had a lightning strike and lost a bunch of electronics, PC, TV, XBOX, etc. I made a $4,500 claim, with a $500 deductible.

When I got my next bill, there was a claim surcharge as well as I lost my no claim discount. Sounds like double dipping. I raised my deductible to $5K. I will never use it unless there is a major loss.

I know this is not automotive, but I really doubt they will pay out without raising your bill.
