Steering Column Question

Hey guys,

I haven't had any problems on my 09 FX50 up until now. Just recently, I started noticing a LOUD clicking noise when I turn my steering wheel all the way from one direction to the other (usually when I'm stopped). I'm assuming this is NOT normal, but I would like to know if anyone had some ideas as to what this could be. I have the original rims on, and no change in suspension, everything on the vehicle is original stock.

I'd appreciate some advice.

Thanks!!

Have somebody look at your wheel and the wheel liner area while you move the steering wheel. Check if the tire touches or catches anything when moving them.

Ya, I'm thinking it's probably catching or touching something when I turn the wheel. But it's weird how it only or USUALLY happens when I'm stopped and not rolling....

I have that same problem. Right now it is at the dealer, dropped it off Saturday. As it stands, they checked the suspension and it is clear, and the tech has isolated it to the center of the vehicle. They believe it has something to do with the rack and pinion system, however they hope to have a final determination by tomorrow afternoon. Did you get a response yet on your vehicle?

Me too

I have a 2010 FX50 with 7000kms on it and it is doing the same thing. Please let us know what you find out! Thx!

Mine only makes this one click sound when I turn it left or turn it right. I've been in other 2010 and 2009 FX's and they all do it. Not a big deal.

had a thread for this couldnt find the link to it but first when i got my car i recieved a letter from infiniti stating that there is a recal on all 09 FX's to replace the steering wheel column

I'm new to your forum and am glad I found it during my research on a FX50's steering column issue. I just sold my third QX56 and have been on the search for a 2009 FX50 to replace it. The FX50 I am considering has received seven Steering Column repairs by the same dealer within the first 24,000 miles. First repair was at mile 182 prior to vehicle being sold at dealer. I have driven several new FX's on my dealers lot and noticed no problems or noises with the steering column. Is their a steering column issue with the 2009 FX50 that should cause legitimate concern or is it an anomaly to be ignored?:tdown:

I'd like to clear some things up for people cause I noticed across forums there has been some confusion on this steering column issue.

THERE IS NO TSB OR RECALL FOR THE STEERING SYSTEM ITSELF. The TSB that was released is for the steering column comfort adjustment function meaning the tilt and telescoping function. The TSB is for the comfort adjustment failure of the motor. Apparently Infiniti made the motor that moves the steering wheel up and down out of specification causing an early failure. The dealer will upgrade the motor free of charge under warranty.

NOW IF YOUR EXPERIENCING A CLICKING NOISE WHEN TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL FROM LEFT TO RIGHT THIS IS A DIFFERENT SITUATION. There is no TSB or recall out for this problem. But apparently some people are having this issue. What I heard is that dealer states that the rack and pinion made needing to be replaced if you are experiencing a clicking noise when turning the steering wheel. How this happens in the first place I don't know. But I've heard other 09+ FX's make this sound.

Oh and this rack and pinion noise is not a major issue. It will just make one click noise when turned to the left, and one click noise when turned to the right.

@Jeff Roberson can you elaborate a bit more on the "broken" part? what about it was broken? how bad was it? etc. im hearing noises of my own from my FX and will have it checked soon

I misspoke. It was a broken outer tie rod. There is a scrape on the left front that was not there before. I am thinking that my better half bumped into something and didn't tell me. I didn't see the old part, but the problem is resolved. I knew something was wrong because along with the click I was starting to feel a slight vibration when braking. The click, which was more of a clunk by the time I took it too the shop was getting worse by the day. Good luck resolving your issue. I have no issues with my FX50.
