Black trim problem solved

I did a search and didn't find anyone else that has posted this.

I was using a fin cut cleaner and a 6" buffer to clean up the paint and get rid of some small scratches on my fx, i bumped into the ugly black faded trim with the buffer and got this idea to try to buff it a bit... and to my surprise it fixed the fade. I used Maguires fine cut cleaner. Do not use Maguires scratch X, it dosent work and makes it look like shit, and its a lot more abrasive. I also tryed it with out a buffer and its harder and takes a bit more work but it works. No point in wasting all your hard earned money on some dye and having to redo it every 2nd week. I will post pics soon as i take some, in a couple hours.

+1 on the scratch X I tried that with no luck and the dye I tried needs to be redone around every 6 months or so.
 
I think mtnfx found this out too...but his way was a lot more labor intensive. But he found out that eventually it fades back, and you have to redo it again. Also, if it rains, I think it turns back too?....I forget

Hopefully yours will last and we will finally have a permanent solution.

It held up OK in rain and snow and color holds ok after 6 months but there is spotting that needs to be redone. A permanent fix would be much better.Hopefully I should be able to buff the dye off as well as original oxidation.
 
when I first got my fx I polished up my moldings with the buffer as I polished the rest of the fx & they glowed like new, I was happy with them, but, less than a year later they would not polish up like they used to, discolored & faded. I really think that wax & polishing, while making them look good initially, winds up being what eventually kills these moldings. the owner before me never did much more than a basic car wash so they were in good shape initially. I know of a few others that moldings were nice when they got there fx & polished up nicely too, but less than a year later they were crappy too... I think these are the kind of thing that the more you try to make them look good the more they start to look bad, if that makes any sense... just happens to be my observation anyway, weather it's true or not I don't know, but I believe this to be true from what I've seen... I winded up painting mine gloss black & now they glow & shine up & wax up beautifully & should last indefinatley...
 
they look exactly like the black that goes around the top of the rear hatch glass now, just gloss black. did the mirror bases too so no more purple anywhere either... not very easy to do but a real prermanent solution

trim looks good, so do those clear tail lights. I have the red ones.
Someday i'll swap them when a deal comes along
 
Looking good turbo...!! I gues thats the big advantage having your own spray booth isn't it :laugh:

Still not happy with mine but thinking of buying new onces at some point. as i took them off already and the not that smooth anymore.
 
Looks very nice Turbo. My FX sits in an underground garage most of the time but it is just starting to get a slight navy blue look to some of the pieces. How much do you think it would cost to get that done if you had to send it out. Ballpark.
 
Nice work. Masking them does look to be a PITA though. I am getting my rear spoiler painted body color and I think I am going to add all of the window trim to the job.
 
Turbo I live in Queens and I'm interested in having my window trim and possibly some other rough spots painted on my FX. Do you do outside work? If so I'm interested, thanks.

wow, guess I missed your post for a few years:smile (2): sending them out is not possible because there are certain parts that are very difficult to remove, like the quarter glasses, then there are other parts that are impossible to remove without ruining & requiring replacing, so this really needs to be done with most parts on the car. I remove & disassemble both mirrors & all 4 door belt moldings, everything else pretty much has to stay on the car & be masked

Do you think a rattle can job will be ok? My my fx is black so I'm thinking as long as I get black paint it won't matter if it's a bit off the oem color. Also what's the prep work? Just some light wet scuffing/sanding?

I spray mine with Fusion last August. They still holding out nicely. I took them off the door. I scruff them, fusion, sand. I give then a few layer and light sanding between layer. No sanding on final layer then a couple coat of clear.
 
they can def be done with a spray can and t's def cheaper to do with a spray can too. it's all in the prep & masking. the benefit of professional spraying would be that the materials sprayed are activated muti part products with a hardener. urethane sprayed like this will be as durable as a regular car finish, while a spray can will be less durable, more delicate, but if taken care of can be very nice too.
