What kind of drivers would install a plenum spacer?

Hi everyone.

For those of you who installed the plenum spacers, what kind of drivers are you?

Just trying to analyze my want vs. need on this mod.

I am a very light foot driver (slow accelerations, keeping rpm under 2000), rarely a heavy foot. The Fx gas pedal feels the floor maybe once a month when trying to catch the freeway or to pass up someone slower than me.

Reading the way I drive, the plenum spacer would not be beneficial to me huh?

Suggestions please!
 
The spacer opens up from around 3500-4000ish rpms. Now you might think that you're not driving really in that range but think about the initial couple of accelerations. The 35 auto trans starts grabbing around 2250-2400 rpms and it's not a long way from that to 3500. You'll feel gain but if you constantly shift below 3500 then it may not be beneficial for you. Still, for $150-200, it's a great mod.
 
True that...would it unleash the beast? Sounds like people love this mod and end up with heavier feet.

But you're right, for under $200, can't go wrong on this.

Do you have to remove the 2 upside bolts on the sides? Is it not possible to just fit the spacer over those 2 "guide" bolts in step 8?

Yes they have to be removed...I did it exactly the way the "tip" suggests...very easy to do this way.

for the spacer mod....You'll notice the extra umph when passing....and that was a good deal!
 
So one quick question...Sorry to thread jack...

Living in MN our temps range from 100 in the summer to -20 or lower in winter. What would be the best spacer for me?

I think you'll need the copper ISO spacer from Motordyne. Looks a lot harder to install than the basic...good luck!

Hey 05FX35,

I don't think you'll need 1/2" spacer. 5/16" is good enough and performance is pretty much on par with the 1/2".

On top of that, it'll save you an extra $100.

one thing misleading on MD's site about copper is that it's not REQUIRED for cold weather. It isolates the upper plenum from the throttle body (which is heated). In really cold weather, the copper throttle body spacer prevents the upper plenum to get heated through the throttle body, ie, more power when it's cold outside. When it's hot, the benefits are not much..
 
Only one thing to do, wait and see/feel....

How does our fx feel at the 2,000 rpm range with this spacer? I tend to maintain 60 mph on freeway speeds.....dang

You won't regret installing an MD spacer...unless you overtorque a bolt and break it. also, make sure the rubber flap around the oil fill tube does not get pinched between the spacer and the plenum. You will have a bad leak. Don't start the FX without making sure all of the electrical connectors are in place. That will keep the SES light from coming on.
 
I read about the spacer on the MotorDyne website about using the copper plenum spacer for areas where it gets cold. The coldest it gets in my area is 1x degrees F and the hottest is 105ish, 110 degrees F max. Would I need the copper plenum spacer or just the basic? Thanks.

Shortly, you don't NEED it. If you want to get a little more power (2-3 more hp maybe), you can go with copper.. If not, just get the basic. The main benefit is the additional air, not the heat isolation.
 
Plenum Spacer Arrived

Hi Guys,

The MD kit arrived yesterday but a little concerned that the kit did not include the gasket. Did you guys receive a gasket with your spacer? It shouldn't be a big deal though, looks like you could just place this spacer over the gasket already in place.

Can't wait, thanks for all the tips...
 
I see it, under the section "Cleaning the interior of the plenum:"

I guess it's an option to take it out or leave it in....I'll leave it in, give it an extra micro layer of space, hehe.
 
Plenum spacer installed!

I don't know what 10HP feels like, but it does not feel like much, plus still no indication of extra 2 mpg gains.

Did you guys feel the hp increase right away?
