Hissing from steering wheel

This just started to happen, but I am getting this hissing sound from the steering wheel. It happens while i drive and when the car is completely stopped. It stops for a sec or two when, while completely stopped, when i turn the wheel or, while moving, when i am changing lanes or turning.

I'm leaning toward it having something to do with the power steering, but not sure where if at all in with the power steering, the problem can be.

I'm hoping this is something that can be covered with the powertrain warranty.

appreciate the offer, but I live in Guam. I'm just trying to get an idea of what it could be. the still drives the same, just that you have this hissing sound from the steering wheel.

Is your fluid level OK?
Notice any leaks at bottom or on the ground (front)?
Any dummy light ever come on on the dash?

I haven't noticed anything out of place other then the sound of air being released. The only leak, which i see all the time is condensation from the A/C after it's been on for a while, other than that nothing out of place. This morning I noticed the sound coming from the right front tire, but it could be heard on the left as well. I'm starting to think it has nothing to do with the power steering, but some how the steering effect the sound when i turn the wheel either way.

I even did the test to see if the power steering is not working and it's fine.

I'm going to see if I can take it in as soon as possible. Don't really have time when at work.

Haven't had time to make it to the dealer to check with them on what the problem could be but talk to a mechanic friend and was told that it should be something normal. He was telling me that it could be just the fluid flowing around for the steering. I did take a look at my power steering fluid and it was where it needs to be. It still bugs me that I can hear something that doesn’t sound normal, but will find out Monday what, if any, the problem is.

Just got off the ORG forum and it may be a problem with the steering rack. possible some type of restriction on the front steering rack. I guess the person that had his replaced had the power steerinf flushed and it did nothing. they replaced his steering rack. I just hope its not going to put a hole in my pocket.

Just finished fixing the steering problem. What would have taken 8 hours at the dealer took only 2 and a half hours. Hardest part was removing some bolts that needed a little elbow grease but other than that no problem at all.

I can say that now the car drive a lot better. Able to take turns a lot tighter with out feeling any play with the steering wheel.

When I get a chance I will put up a DIY for this. It's real easy to do and it will save a lot of money on labor, just need a few tools.

you changed the rack?

Yeah, I was surprised that it was that fast. Didn't take much to get to it. After it was all done the only problem we had was the steering being set to the wrong position. When i went to test drive it, the slip and VDC light kept coming on. It took about 30 min to figure out it what it was before we fixed it.

oh, gotta be careful not to orient it wrong, you can damage the clock spring in the column too...

Yeah, that was the first thing my friend told me when we detached the column. I think thats what threw us off later, wheels weren't exactly center when we detached the outer tie rods. We just disconnected and left it alone until we reattached it. Later on it was off center by a revolution. it was a simple fix, just took a while to figure out why the lights kept coming on.
