Nissan OEM IPOD install

The other day, Toncruse, Rubare (DMV) got together for a mini meet and mod session.

I bought the Nissan OEM ipod interface (non-sat radio kit) before Xmas, and together we perfromed the install. To tell the truth, it was a huge benefit to have the extra hands and help to do this mod.

I got a few pictures, no way a comprehensive record of the install, but I will share what I have.

First I recently bought a set of nylon pry bars from Harbor Freight, these things are inexpensive, and indispensible for this job.

If you are doing this mod, then it is probably best to disonnect the battery first. Or do as I did, and at least don't turn on the ignition unless everything is completely connected or disonnected.

The basic order of things is to remove the clock, the shifter knob, the console top, and then the dash cover over the head unit.

To remove the shift knob you slide the plastic cover down, and remobe the metal clip. then the knob slides right off. Be sure not to lose the blue plastic piece. Best to remove it too. and set it aside.

The Factory Service manual has illustrations on how to remove the clock and console, but again, you really need the trim tools for this to prevent damage.

As you go along you will have to disconnect each electrical connection. These can be sticky, but once you pust in the connector lock (using a trim tool helps with this too) they usually come out without mch difficulty. Whatever trouble you have now with getting the connectors apart will be rewarded upon re-assembly. They go back together much easier than they come apart.

You will also need to shift the transmission in to drive to remove the console top.

The clock face has one connector, the console top has four, and the head unit face has two ribbon cables. One of the ribbon cables has a snap in strain relief that will need to be removed with a pair of needle-nose pliers.

Finally you get to the head unit (HU), and you can remove the six screws that hold it in place.

You can see the ribbon cables in the picture above to the right of the HU.

To remove the HU, I can't even remember how many connectors there are to remove. Even though it might be possible to install the Ipod Interface by only removing the necessary connectors, it is certainly much easier to remove them all to perform the install.

Above is the HU out. now comes the easy part.

Basically, you just plug in the Ipod interface harness in to whatever connectors that they fit. One of the original connectors will be replaced with the interface harness. It is basically impossible to connect anything to the wrong place. No two connectors are alike.

I chose to install the interface box to the back of the screen unit. This was done so by using some heavy duty sticky backed Velcro I had on hand. We also put some padding strips (included inthe kit) around the box to protect it from vibration, and prevent rattles.

You have to find a ground for the new harness....I first verified that this was a good ground with a meter. View attachment 163223

The ground wire shown above was attached so it was behind the plastic to assure it would have a better connection. Rubare insisted on putting it here, and he was absolutely correct in doing so. He had a lot of good suggestions that were hard to argue with. It is these small details that make all of the difference.

The Ipod cable was routed through the console using the supplied zip ties to keep the cable from , and we drilled a hole in to the console box using a small hole saw (3/4") sized for the included grommet.

And that is about it, except for one thing, the instructions on how to use it basically aren't written for the FX head unit. I still haven't figured out how to use it, but other thatn testing it to see that it works, I really haven't had a chance to figure it out.

If anyone has done this mod, and knows where there are a set of user instructions I would appreciate it much!

Well we installed it and got it done. Great write up! I'll give you some more details to make it easier for other to get this done when I see you.

Thank you Bill!!

nice write up...but what makes this one different then 626fx...he has a different ipod interface and doesn't need a ground? hopefully he can chime in or someone because i will be ordering mine soon

I believe this is for 03-05. For 06-08 you don't need to remove the clock or the shifter panel. You only need to do it if you want to route the cable to the cup holder or arm rest.

Well this one it's obviously install on the front. And let you play with the place where you want to put the ipod. But the one on the back don't let you do that much.

What do you mean? I have the one that connects at the rear.....and I can set it in the nav screen if I needed to.

I wish I could see your DIY (at work and pics get blocked). I wasn't aware that nissan had an iPod hook up that was installed directly into the radio. I have the one that hooks up threw the SAT and I ran the cable into the center console. It's news too me, anyway.

congrats on the work, nothing better than not having to hear CD's anymore. Get's tiring to change them out even after all 6 cd's play threw.

From the looks of it, it the same set up that I have I just ran my cable from were the SAT radio would have been plugged in. Just from the pics, it looks like you either dissconnected the SAT plug and replaced it with the interface, or you never had a SAT cable running from the trunk at all. But all in all if i would have know that I would be able to connect it straight into the radio without the extra cable, I probably would have done so. I did my setup a while back and it took me a while just to get the cable under the carpet.

Once again very nice write up.

The sat wasn't disconnected, we plugged the iPod interface unit where the sat was in. If he ever wanted to get sat he will plug it to the cable that was left loose from the ipod interface harness. The only thing is. With that setting (iPod/sat) only one could be use at the time, so it's just a case of one or the other.

So what your saying is the only difference is the location of the interface. I don't have SAT radio but i still ran all my cables from the trunk.

Not trying to stir the pot here, just want to get clarification for future interface buyers. Trust me if I knew I could just plug in from the radio i would have saved about two hours and about 50 buck (for the extra harness).

Well from what you said about your iPod kit and from what Lil I know about the one we installed, I think you are right. It might be just the location. But bill can chime in and correct me if I'm Wrong.

Let me see if I can clarify this further.

Initially this kit was only available to be installed in the rear (trunk) of the car, patched in to the sat cable. This made it difficult to locate the ipod up front. But remember, This was not made for the FX, it is an adaptation of a Nissan option.

The guy that sells it now makes a harness that allows you to install it up front. There are two front kits available, one if you have sat radio, and one without sat radio. There are also two rear kits available, both with and without sat as well. They are slightly cheaper than the front kits. I'm not sure if the '03s had the sat cable (front to rear) pre-installed.

The '04 does have the sat cable that runs to the back, and basically it was left unplugged since I don't have sat radio. If I did have sat radio, then I would would have gotten the kit that includes another adapter cable. This adapter cable allows you to plug in the factory sat cable in to the open slot on the back of the ipod adapter. You can see the open slot in the picture.

This whole thing took a lot of research, even though I got most of my information intially from infinitifx.org, it is not easy to understand. There is a 600+postings/25 page thread there that is very confusing because it follows the whole history which changes over time. They tried to clarify it slightly by adding another post about the part numbers, but IMO it still isn't clear enough. I hope this clears it up for you as well as for anyone who considers installing this in the future. If not, I will continue to entertain any questions, feel free to ask.

So Massive, since you have had the adapter for awhile, can you shed some light on how to work the radio buttons to control the ipod? I still haven't had a chance to sit down and figure it out.

Yeah, I've been reading up on this mod like crazy. I haven't had time to check out if I have SAT or not. I pressed the SAT button and nothing happened, so I assume I don't have SAT. Another member said that he doesn't have SAT but the cables were run and just not connected. I think I'll just get the front kit because I know I don't have sat and if any cables were run, I'll just disconnect them.

You may be SAT capable, buy don't have satellite service, its not free. I think I pay something 30+ dollars a quarter for the service, not too bad since XM/SIRIUS combined. They have a few packages to choose from, monthly, quarterly, yearly, or one lifetime charge I think.

I agree with you guys that the info is not concise and to the point. Someone over there or here should cut out all the junk and make a decent list.

I can say this also applies to the NAv_TV thing. We (IS) needs its own DIY on this with better clarification on adding the stock DVD player (I want to watch my wife's Iphone on the main screen !).

sometimes searching just creates more questions. :embarrassed:

That would be awesome.. Can one actually do that, watch the iPhone on the main screen? And about the stock DVD we defenely need a DIY for it..
