FX35 2004 Iphone integrated stereo kit

I'm sure that this has been discussed before, but I want to integrate my Iphone fully into my car stereo system, but not using an FM modulator. I called several stereo places and one guy talked of a system using the Satellite button. Any experience out there?:tup:
 
I have my NAV/TV/Ipod setup and it works with the 1st gen Ipod. Since I got the 3g, it hasnt worked because they changed the pin on the new ones. I have to get the Apple component AV cable and hook it up to the rca jacks where my ps2 would normally go.

I did it for my 1st gen iPod Touch and currently using a 2nd gen iPod Nano. Also can use my iPhone 3G using a Kensington 4-in-1 car charger since the new iPhone 3G and latest generation iPods won't charge using regular Nissan gateway. Alternatively, you can use a charging adapter. Here's what I'd do:

1) Get the iPod integration kit from this site:

If you have sat, get the Front Kit with sat, if not, get the Front kit w/o sat. Front kit is the easiest to install. You just have to remove the radio, plug it in and route the ipod cable to wherever you want

2) Get either Kensington 4-in-1 (http://us.kensington.com/html/11205.html) or a charge adapter. The ones below are the only two offered as far as I know:

3) Get it installed or install it yourself. I initially modified a stock iPod dock with custom internals to fit the ashtray like the one below:

It is too much trouble honestly. I gave up on that and routed the cable beneath the cup holder and the iPod/iPhone sits here now:

If you'd like, you can route the cable inside the armrest as well but it'll require more drilling..

By the way, that gum box in the cupholder was this:

It was too tall and I couldn't close the lid so modified it as well :laugh:
 
A local shop can install an integrated harness system for around $250. On-line that's the cost for the harness alone. Thoughts?

Does that harness allow steering wheel & oem stereo controls is the question. There are tons of ipod kits and some won't allow that. If that's the price for the oem Nissan integration, go for it. If not, you'll be sorry you've spent $250 for something half functional. As I said before, it's very easy to install the front kit from that site. I can even post a how to on it pretty easily.

I followed the link and sent an email to Nissanipod.com. They responded with a kit that appears to be a complete kit, at least thats what the description says. EG3 under #2, posted a link for a Kensington adapter and others. So I take it the compete kit from Nissanipod is not a complete kit?
 
By the way the installion from the local shop would allow the iphone to work through the stereo, but would not be a fully integrated system, as in being able to control through the stereo or through the steering column. It would however charge.

Newer iPods and iPhones won't charge using the Nissan gateway (which is included in that package) because Apple changed the charging specs for iPods/iPhones after the iPhone 3G. You have to either use a charging adapter or something that can charge the iPod/iPhone 3G using a USB connection which Kensington does. Adapters change the voltage given by the Nissan gateway to USB specs (originally they're Firewire specs) OR if you use kensington, it skips the power given by the Nissan gateway entirely and uses a separate power source (which is the 12V cigarette lighter plug).

If you have an older generation iPhone/iPod, then you don't need to worry about the adapters/charger. iPods up and including 3rd Gen (square one) and the first generation iPhone charges and plays without a problem. This is an issue for almost every old type chargers including your stereo dock etc. Old charging power type was Firewire spec which is 12V as with all cars. Apple changed their charging spec from Firewire to USB which is a 5V. Without an adapter or such your newer gen iPhone will play but won't charge with standard Nissan gateway (or almost any iPod adapter in the market now).

I'm going to buy the Nissanipod kit, but have a shop install it. I assume they would be able to come up with the adapters and a power source, do you agree?
