Question about 1/2" ISO thermal spacer (Note: Big Picture)

The sole reason the 5/16ths and 1/2 was even offered was because the 5/16th fits under stock 350Z strut bar. We don't have that issue, so it'd be wise to go with 1/2.

Tony from Motordyne wanted to market something for us to utilize even MORE volume. The test platform he made, he bolted to his 350Z and he loved the results and was talking and hyping this thing up like none other... He couldn't keep the hood of his 350Z on while testing this, and then when it came time to try it for the FX he found out that the difference in engine mounting and firewall placement made it a no-go for the FX. The firewall wouldn't allow it.

So go with the 1/2 for an FX

screw it.....1-2" spacer

cut a hole in your hood, put a lexan cover in the hole and become a FX-ZR1

beats all those dyslexic FX54's, S's, and Nismo's

I'm reading that the power gains are only really felt above 4000 rpm, is that true?

I put a Stillen Z tube and intake at the same time as the plenum spacer. On the freeway, you go to pass, and it just takes off! so yeah about 3500-4000 rpm, the spacer REALLY makes a difference. I noticed it made a bigger difference for me when doing a 3rd gear pass on the freeway, then it did from a dead stop. The FX takes off from a redlight great for a vehicle of our weight...my concern was more for that passing lane speed.

Sound wise...it has a louder and deeper growl to it.

Yes, on the 1/2 inch its more for the top end......4K sounds about right. When I first got mine it felt great in the higher RPM's but now Im used to it and think its just normal.

if you're looking for something more towards the bottom end go with the 5/16 but power tops off earlier.

Well guys just finished installing my 1/2" iso plenum and let me tell you ... install was a bitch .. :) .. anyways that + a JWT Popcharger with the stillen z-tube makes the fx come alive. Sounds like a full grown beast. Resonators delete with flowmaster 80 added a good touch to the exhaust tone and the sound is alot deeper. Will get vids up soon :D

P - thx for the recommendation. That's what Toy said also. I'm probably going to go with the 5/16.

How long did it take you and what were the problems?

Well for me install was pretty long. For installing something on an engine for my first time with a couple friends to help it took about 3 hrs b/c we disconnected a hose that we shouldn't of. But we got it reconnected and the top plenum is really hard to tilt sideways and make it stay so you can get to the lower plenum. But once we were there install was a breeze. We put the valve gasket on then the lower plenum, then did the 1/2" install and man it was easy from there on. Make sure you have a couple people there to help you out with install cause it is not a one man job.

for those of you who live in climates that have drastic changes between seasons, you would definitely want to go with the MD's ISO thermal . The valves makes a difference in the summer.

Consider this. In winter time, you want to make sure that the throttle body does not freeze when over night therefore you want coolant to flow though it and stay there when the the engine is off. But during the summer, this does not happen. The flow of the hot coolant though the Throttle body will make the air that is flowing though it warmer. Having the Valve to shut off the flow of the coolant is an added performance mod.

For those who don't live in colder climates, copper does not do much for you.

hmm.... so for ISO 1/2", you have to really gun it to feel the power? I bought one from Fred not long ago :), should I go for 5/16 instead if I want an average gain around the whole rpm? Is there that much of difference? And how about in Vancouver, will Copper be better or ISO?

Vancouver - summer High: 32C, Low 15C
Winter / Spring - High: 5C, Low -5C

Thanks

Thanks for the feedback. Report back on the mod after you have had some time with it.

See post #7 from Toy. He explains it quite succinctly.

I'm not trying to steal away any sale or anything, but if you didn't have a copper warmer thing before why would you need one now. All you are doing is raising the cover up 5/16", that's all. I didn't go with an copper plate and have been driving it all winter with temps down to -35c with absolutely no issues. If that's not testing it, I don't know what is. Save yourself some cash for other mods.

If you didn't install anything (valve or copper plate) then you won't have any issues since the coolant will heat up everything like it did before BUT it will heat up your plenum as well. That's where this thing makes a difference. When it's below zero outside, with the copper plate, your throttle body will heat up properly BUT your plenum won't and it'll keep your air intake degrees as low/close to the temps under the hood.

If you get the valve and keep it closed in cold temps, your throttle body will freeze. If you keep it on, your entire plenum will heat up like it would normally.. So if you want a little colder air inside the plenum (how little is up for debate) and if you live where it's cold in the winter, copper is a good mod.

Are those 6 white caps high quality? I heard plastic will crack after a long time of use. I hope nothing will happen to those caps and cause problem to my engine. :zip:

lol mine didnt come with white caps ... they were black but all the caps are is to hold the screws and help the spacer space the plenum
