My engine smells

I dont know. My engine smells weird. I am wondering if its because the car is new to me but the smell seems like a burning something. should there be any smell coming from the engine?

the smell seems like a burning something
Either 1: excess coolant spray is burning off or 2: oil is being burned off. Either way it's most likely something in contact (whether liquid or not) with exhaust piping. Lastly, it could be an exhaust leak way up front (header gasket or where header meets catalytic converter) whether through a flange or just a straight hole.

Do you ever see any minuscule amount of smoke coming from under the hood, especially when you've driven for a while and then pop the hood while it's still running when you park?

also very common is the possibility of a plastic bag stuck to hot exhaust, then, every time it heats up you get a burning smell till either it all burns off or is scraped off...

i get rotten egg stink from my car when i beat on it real good. does that mean my cats are shot? or on their way out? my warranty is up, but aren't cats covered by law even after the manufacturers warranty ends?

Dude the same thing happens to me but it only makes the rotten egg smell when i drive like on the freeway or highway. Always is a rotten egg smell. All my friends said it was the cats making that smell so im thinking my cats are done or not working properly. maybe time to get hfc :D

Check the cabin filter as well, it could be as simple as that.

You may still be under warranty for cats

How do i know for sure that it needs to be replaced though? is that what the egg smell is telling me? also, won't the dealer just try to blame it on my y-pipe and muffler that aren't stock.

I had mine checked at the dealer for no charge since the cats are covered by long term emmission warranty.
