Tiptronic question

the computer protects it from much harm, won't allow you to downshift if it'll cause redline, downshifts for you if you forget & come to a stop. about the only thing harmful is it can allow you to beat your car more, which may not be the best thing if your into babying it, but otherwise it's not really harmful
 
Thanks for all the good replys guys! But sometimes when I drive it hard and I get out I smell some burning, care to enlighten me on what this is? I know that cant be good.
 
I bounce redline when going from my Mazda to my FX. My Mazda shifts up when pulling down and pushing up downshifts. This is the way it should be! Can ANYONE explain to me WHY Infiniti put the shifting backwards? All performance cars, actually almost all cars put it the way my Mazda has it.

When changing cars I always forget and mess up once or twice...ok ok... I just leave it Auto now!!!
 
I use tip only when I wanna have some fun, otherwise its only at the track. I bounced off the red a bunch of times before Tadashi removed the limiter now I keep an eye on it.

Turbo switched it, I'm sure he can tell you how.
 
yeah, switching the up & down of the shifter is easy, you do have to pull the radio out & in the radio stack there are several metal boxes & one plastic box. you need to switch 2 wires going to one of the plugs into this plastic box. if you want particulars or diagrams I'll get them for you, it's a 20 minute job & problem solved, no real butchery, an easy mod that, especially for you since you have another car that's opposite, would be a good thing to do, lmk if you want all the details to do this...
 
If I'm not mistaken I think the merceds are the same way as the infiniti cause when I was driving one for bit I drove it in manumatic and I don't remember being confused at all.
 
In manual mode will the computer automatically shift for you after hitting redline? Or will it rev to the limiter, and if so when does cut-out kick in on the FX?

Very nice. I hate manu-matics that have an upshift over ride. Do you know at what RPM the limiter kicks in? Or how many RPM past redline we have to play with?
 
The manual mode is a lot slower on the highway on ramp than auto mode. It seemed like the computer tuned down the power in manual mode because even if downshift you floored it you don't feel the thump in the acceleration. But if you just put the pedal to the metal on auto mode on the onramp and as soon as the speed hits 20mph+ all the power is transferred to the rear wheels that's when you start to feel like the pull is a lot harder and faster.

Maybe because you're in the incorrect gear on the ramp? Manual mode is never slower than auto for me. If you mean downshifting 2 gears at once, try doing two quick taps with the first gear change in between and it'll still downshift faster than auto.

I've see the reverse shifter plate on ebay under either under 350Z or FX35. It has the word UP and DN in reverse and it looks just like the 03-05 shift plate.
