Studs!!!

No not the men.... I already know i'm a stud HAHA

So when ken and i put him rims on my car last week i went to Goodyear to have them use an impact wrench to tighten all the bolts. Well apparently they overtightened them.

Today i brought my car home from the Cheryl and jacked up my baby to put some new pads on.... Broke off 3 studs off the driver side and 2 studs off the passenger side.

Baby is getting towed (on the flatbed) to the shop in the am to get all new studs on the front end.

Sorry to hear about this Ali, but you should never use a impact wrench on your wheel studs. Just hand tighten is all you need.

was the car hot when you tried to unloosen the studs? metal expansion.

On the same not I have a stud problem also. Its on my front spacer. wheel started to make noise on hwy speeds, check it out and all 5 nuts were semi loose. was removing tire and one nut was stripped the way out. All other 4 looked ok. I wonder if this was damaged during the installation on the spacers. Also found out I need to carry a 19mm tire wrench now, since the spacers use a diff size nut.

Why does every tire shop I see use a impact wrench? I hate that.

Is it recommended to use a anti seize compound on the studs?

good luck Ali. maybe you jinx yourself talking about the flatbed on the other post. (knock on wood) :vroam:

HAHA>... yeah with my luck huh, Life never goes smooth for too long right?

Well the impact wrench is supposed to only be set to 95 Flbs of torque at that shop and that honestly would not break them. But i think what would do it is that i drove on it and they tightened them hot. Seriously though i have had work done many times before and have always used an impact wrench on my cars to tighten everything and never once done that.

Ouch!!!

Sorry to hear about your stud issues. As to impact wrenches they come in many different torque capable ranges and the mechanic if not carefull could easily over torque the nuts. The proper way to tighten wheels with a impact wrench is to have the impact turned down enough that you can complete final torque with a torque wrench.Once your studs have been overtightend the threads will stretch and even though you torque them to proper setting the wheel may still come loose as the torque required to achive same clamping pressure between the hub and wheel surfaces is greater.Final tightening should always be done with a torque wrench and threads should be lubricated.

damn, I feel bad about that

not your fault or mine bud....

So i took my car in this morning and the manager there was a complete ass to me and pretty much threw the paper in my face. So i found out today that one of the guys that work for me here in my office used to work for them. He gave me their corporate HQ number and the name of the VP to talk to. I'm going to call them and make sure they fix my car right and reprimand that guy. I was pretty ticked off about the situation but when i talked to him last night by phone and this morning when i was there i was calm and chill about it all. No reason in being rude and pissed off about anything. Accidents happen right.
