G37 / FX50 Akebono Brake Retrofit

winded up being perfect timing with this, I thought the fx parts would still be a while before they'd become available... I still have no listing of them in my database at all, can't even look stuff up on them yet...

another good thing is, I'll be able to compare this brake setup overall to the rotora front setup at least... if it stops anything like that it'll be nice, which it should be pretty good I think...
 
One of the 2nd gen G35 sedans with the Akebonos test drove the FX50 with the Akebonos and said the brakes felt different compared to his sedan. Not as much stopping power or something, will find the post later.
 
if the brakes are pretty much the same on the g sedan & the new fx, I would expect them to feel better in the g than the fx, less weight would probably account for the difference there I would think, same way the same motor would feel faster in the lighter car too. I'd expect them to feel better in a lighter car, the question still remains how much better these'll be than the original fx brakes & how they compare to them & how they compare to the rotoras on the fx...

these parts should ship out to me on friday, don't know how soon they'll arive to me... with the new fx rear spindles I'm pretty sure the rear is a done deal at this point... the fronts are what I'm a bit unsure of, swapping spindles there doesn't sound like a possibility if they changed the whole suspension design like viet said... still a bit hard to say how sucessful that will be but if it does work out should be real nice compared to a single piston floating caliper design.

when aftermarket cross drilled rotors & performance pads become available for these is where they'll really start to show there stuff I think, the good part is the rotors & pads are only a small part of the costs here, so there is not too much waste in using the oe stuff untill the aftermarket stuff becomes available...
 
i have no idea what you guys said in that whole mid section but those g37 brakes are hott... they look like they are from the art deco future

break/brake... anyone ever see the shop on barham and the 101 that had the 'break job 59.95' ... always made me laugh

really looking forward to working with these brakes... this could wind up being THE mod for 2008... so much value for such a great price... these akebono's are awesome brakes & to do anything comparable with aftermarket BBK would cost double to even triple what these will cost... I think this will wind up being a must have for any performance oriented FX owner... finally a real deal multi-piston non floating caliper BBK kit without having to take a second mortgage View attachment 153306 the brakes have always been a week spot in the first gen fx's, this is a very welcome & benificial upgrade I think & pretty cost effective considering what your getting..."

yeah man, I anounced this here in my g37s retrofit thread that winded up evolving ito the fx50s retrofit:tongue: turns out there are many similarities between the g37 brakes & the fx50 brakes, so much so that some parts are the same... for example they use the exact same rear calipers... can't say what other parts are the same cause I don't have a database on the 09 fx50 yet, I should be recieving these soon from joe & see how it goes...
 
alright, scheduled delivery was for Monday, but the whole thing showed up at my shop late this afternoon View attachment 153307 ... really big & really heavy box & then another smaller heavy box.....

didn't have the time to take the whole rear suspension apart but so far the rears should be fine with the new knuckle... only thing I see that needs confirmation of fit now is the top ball joint. the hole in the spindle for the ball joint seems pretty large, can't tell if the earlier fx ball joint is the same or not. I needed to drive home tonight so I couldn't start ripping the whole rear suspension apart, but even if this became an issue there are several possible solutions...

the rear backing plates don't include the parking brake hardware & shoes... need to confirm same diameter old to new, I know the g37s brakes used a smaller parking brake... again, not a huge obstacle either, worse case is this would have to include loaded backing plate assemblies... I'll confirm this tomorrow

then the biggest question... do the front's fit? I wouldn't be able to sleep tonight if I didn't at least try the fronts... so I jacked her up & pulled my brakes off... slid the rotor on, crossed my fingers & slid the caliper into place.... and whadayaknow, IT FITS!!! View attachment 153307

at this point were just about there, I hesitate to say for sure that the backs will just fit 100%, but I'm pretty certain were good there, & the fronts are a done deal at this point. I couldn't fully install the fronts because the bolts are a different thread & these bolts need to be added to this package from Joe. I might be able to confirm the rears tomorrow but I'll need to have enough time to complete the install once I rip it apart, so it may have to wait till Monday worse case to confirm details in the rear...


this whole retrofit just went from about 75% probable to about 97% probable. this is great news for all fx'ers.

the fx's handling & acceleration are adequate but the limits of the brakes are reached pretty easily, the stock brakes on all first gen fx's are small single piston sliders, when it comes to performance they are severely limited with not so hot modulation & fade/overheat easily. there probably one of the weakest points of the current fx overall. in a word, they pretty much suck, these should hopefully be a huge improvement View attachment 153309
