Cutting aftermarket springs

Production

From the posts Ive read there are some members with cut eibachs as well as HRs that have had great success, since these springs are specific to the FX why cant they come off production 1/2 a coil less?. By this I dont mean that they cut them at the factory, rather that they already come off production a half a coil shorter. Do these companies gather feeback from specific communities like the FX community to know that we are in fact in majority modifying/cutting theire springs to decrease wheel well space?. Or is it simply too much of a risk for them to produce a shorter version, I think with a little R&D it may be possible for these springs to come off production a half a coil shorter. What do you guys think?

Springs are a performance part not aesthetic. They may lower your vehicle in the process and make it look nicer but a spring is engineered to make your vehicle perform better first and foremost.

Which is why he wants them to design them to perform while lowering more. Cutting it to give a better drop is taking away from the performance they designed like you stated. If they changed the spring rate and produced them with less coils, or tighter wound coils, you can have a similar, maybe better handling characteristics with a lower drop. There's always a sacrifice though, and I'm thinking it would be detrimental to ride quality to keep going lower.

Thats exactly what I was trying to say. Shorter version with the same performance. It does make sense that if the spring is cut then the overall performance is altered. Why cant we have both?

This sentence just reaffirms my point completely.

Springs are designed for optimal performance. If they go lower then handling and ride characteristics will most likely be effected. Plus it limits wheel selection and alignment and camber options. Using the Eibach Pro-kit as an example, there is about an inch of wheel gap between the tire and the fender. Any lower and you run the risk of rubbing on the track. That is obviously far from ideal and even dangerous. I saw a post from Dr.2K that I believe is on Eibachs and he had to shave his front and rear fenders to run his 22s I think. Companies aren't going to design an aftermarket spring that forces their customers to modify their cars just to run them safely.

Ok, so my H&R's are off my FX right now. I am gonna get her lowered again today. I am thinking of having them cut half a coil on the front springs and then I am not sure how much they shave off on the rear mounts. For some odd reason I can't see the pics on the other post. Do they shave both top and bottom mounts or just one and how much? Getting this done today after work.

in rookie's pics they just shaved the thicker upper mounts, and depending on how much you cut will determine the drop (1/2" = 1/2").

Not much you can cut off the lower rubber mounts, he was just showing a pic of them.

Thanks Jeff, that's what I was looking for. Do you know about how many inches they shaved off?

Doesn't say in the thread, but looking at the pic it looks about 1/2 - 3/4 inch. Just remember, what ever you cut off will be the amount of extra drop you get.

what if I just cut the 1/2 coil on the front springs and leave the back alone?

The H&R uncut sit higher in the back already...Can you leave them alone and shave the mount for a more even look ???
