Only thing I can think of is sand it down, mask the area and spray paint with a similar color.
Don't you think that will peel off later in time??
Just sand it very well. FXLR (spelling) did something similiar, I'll wait for him to chime in.
You can always get it professionally done and get them to warranty it.

Ched you are going in the correct direction. Just take in mind that if you do not apply the paint properly you will run into fading issues latter on.
I suggest taking it to a body shop and having them paint it for you. Make sure you remove the handles and the Estucheons for them to save money on the labor.
If you do opt to do it your self.. Wet Sand... Wet Sand and Wet Sand again... Apply Primer twice... Then Jet Black or in your case Gray Base coat and then DG color coat twice and the clear coat 3 coats.. Let it set for 1 day... then Wet Sand to take one layer off the Clear coat to remove any imperfections or air bubles.... then Polish.. Buff... Wax.. and your done...
