Drivers exterior door handle not working 2010 FX50

Hey guys, my drivers exterior door handle has come disengaged from the door lock mechanism, this happened after a car wash and a really cold spell. Anyway, I took the door panel off but stopped there since it looks like I have the to dig a little deeper into the door and removed the interior panel as well. I'm wondering if anyone has had this problem as well. The lock and interior handle work perfectly fine and so does the electronic button, it's a physical connection that has been lost. I'm guessing its either the lock rod #7 or handle base #5 that is the problem. Chime in if you've solved this mystery. Link below

this happened to me too it was really cold i took my car for a wash which was a big mistake and my exterior door handle wouldnt work. I had to replace part number 6 cost me about 260 for the part this is in canada by the way and i see you are from toronto. The cable was stretched our so my mechanic kept putting the cable back to the handle but then a few days later the door wouldnt work again thats how they realized the wire was stretched so had to get a whole new door part.

Sounds like the rod might have come out of the handle or off the latch assembly. Ive never taken a 2nd gen apart but have ran into this several times. Usually plastic adapters that the rod slides into wear out.

^ thatsounds about right. On the cables.

Thanks for the reply, interesting, but there is no cable from the exterior handle to stretch, the only cables attach to the interior handle and lock

On second look I suppose there is a cable inside the interior panel, I guess I have no choice but to pull it all apart before I order the parts. Thanks for the help.

Can you feel the handle still biting the interior or just it just move in and out with ease? Also if you use your key to stick it inside the door can you hear the mechanism inside making any noise? It sounds like either the inner tip of the handle broke off from the cold weather and its not fully engaging.

The cable on the inside interior panel is the cable that connects to your inner door mechanism that opens and shuts the door. If your lock and handle work from the inside it is not a result from either or these cable. I work extensively on these inner door panels as i came up with a fix on my own for the faulty door locks. Any other diagnostic information? again check the feel of the door compared to the other side.

It sounds like the little piece of plastic on the bottom of the door handle may have snapped or cracked. I do not know how to remove the new gens handle, but ill pm you the instructions that i creaated to remove the first gen handle if it helps.

I've had the same thing happen. Twice! Last year and again this year, just as winter starts to set in and the temperatures change. Aligns perfectly with the stories here of happening after a car wash. If fixed it both times, but it's really tedious.
There's no rod that connects the handle to release mechanism, it's a short cable. That's why the door handle action feels so smooth! There must be some moisture inside the cable that makes adds some friction between the inner cable and the outer sheath. What happens is when you pull the door handle, the cable pulls too and opens the mechanism, but when you release the door handle, the knob on the end of the cable pops out of the handle cradle because the cable retracts slower (due to the cable being a bit stuck/slow in the sheath).
It can all be fixed through the small opening(s) in the door skin once the handle/lock have been removed. The inner panel doesn't need to be taken off. It's a pain in the butt, and I had to make a little tool out of copper household wire to reach in and put the cable end knob back into the handle's cradle, but it eventually

happened to me. i took in in to the dealer to fix, cost me 350 as they had to replace the door assembly, something something with the cable. :disapointed:

Hi, i have the exact same issue with the handle. Could you explain a little more how to access the cable and reconnect it without taking off the door panel?

I really wish there was more traffic in this community! This is a super common problem that I’ve run into a year after the last fix. I can’t find the video on YouTube that helped so much, but it would be great if we had more members that contributed here….maybe if more than a handful of people bought these, which is one if the best cars I’ve ever owned, it would’ve helped, but it’s like trying to find info on a 1972 Pantera rear wheel bearing!!!!

I have this same exact issue on the drivers side. Has anyone ever posted a vid or given clear steps on how to resolve this?
