2008 FX45 losing oil and cyl 8 misfire

So I have a 2008 FX45 just recently check engine light came on and started misfiring and burning oil fast also smoking from the exhaust. Took it to the mechanic for a tune up and he said there is a misfire in cylinder 8 and there was oil getting in there as well and low compression in that cylinder. He said I should just change the motor and quoted me $4500. I asked him if there was anything I can do besides that he didn’t want to take it apart and diagnose the problem he just kept saying change the motor. Car smokes alot on start up and clears up a little after a while. No signs of oil leaking anywhere so not sure why it’s burning oil so fast and I have to keep topping up. Car does not over heat and there is no loss of coolant. Not sure what to do from here just don’t have the money to spend on a new motor.

Find another mechanic,
Who is willing to inspect further using a camera fed through the spark plug hole of this cylinder.
This should indicate the source of the problem.

Agreed with what VB said.

A couple things I would do - Change PCV valves to see if that helps lessen with oil consumption. I would also take a closer look at cylinder 8 coil pack and spark plug. I would swap them with another cylinder just to see if the problem move to the cylinder you swapped the coil pack and spark plug. You can always got to Autzone to get them retrieve the CEL code for you to see to compare.

I agree @VLADIMIR BONEV I honestly think the mechanic either didn’t want to do all the extra work. @la_fx35 i will try that let you know how it goes thankyou. I just love these cars and don’t want to change the motor unless I absolutely have to it’s a lot of money.

I just recently had my fx45 start misfiring after a long day of spirited driving. Thankfully it happened near home and wasn't too much of an issue. Unfortunately I'll need a new motor too. My 8th cylinder had some debris from the pistons head that crushed the spark plugs and caused netal shavings to come through the engine oil. Not a disturbing amount but enough to feel comfortable with a new engine. Shop originally quoted 4700 for a replacement motor. After some research on my own I found some as low as 2300 excluding 300 for shipping. Eventually the shop said they could get the same motor for 3200 and I went that route as it came with an extended warranty. Total cost of the replacement with the motor, labor, taxes, motor mounts, coolant flushes, and oil changes came out to $7.699.24.

How many miles were on it when it let go? I had something similar happen to my FX45, a screw from one of the inner throttle body butterflies (power valves?) came loose and went into the engine and bounced around, chewing things up for a bit.

This isn't my car, but this is what mine sounded like when the screw was bouncing around at around 2:30 :

Mine let go around 114k miles.

Take the spark plug out of cylinder 8 if it covered in oil the it's the spark plug tube gasket which goes along with you valve cover gasket and I'd he said there was low compression in cylinder 8 usually 99.9% of the time the motor is just going out but if you want to try replacing that spark plug and coil pack and valve cover gasket see if it stops
