Good morning fellow infinites my06 fx35 overheating while driving but not at idle. If I drive it for about 20 minutes the overflow will fill up and it will overheat with no heat in the cabin. Compression test was done after market thermostat was put in system was checked for leaks and flushed and bled. Idles for hours with out issues until driven. Bottom hose is cold Top is hot. Seems like a common issue can anyone help 180,000 miles

Coolant is not flowing through the radiator. Thermostat is not opening. Air in system.

I had a “reputable “ mechanic look at it but he could not figure it out so he said he thinks it has a blown head gasket putting air in the system, but it won’t overheat at idle and there is no fluids mixing. He said cylinders 1 and 5 have a lower compression than the others. Do you think I need a second opinion before replacing engine. He said that or putting a head gasket was my only choice. I used an after market thermostat and never replaced the radiator.

It's a lot cheaper and easier to replace the radiator. Plus it matches your symptoms. I got an OEM Denso unit for $66. Works great.

The aftermarket thermostat could be questionable. Did the problem occur before you installed it? Also, if you have no cabin heat and the bottom rad hose is cold then it is a problem with coolant flow, not a head gasket issue. You either have a bad water pump or blocked radiator. I suggest finding a different reputable mechanic.

I changed the thermostat because one day out of the blue the heat cooled off but when I started driving it got hotter. Didn’t notice any overheating at that time
