1st Gen FX - FX50S BBK Retrofit (AKEBONO)

haha. i work at a dealership and we buy from LKQ all the time. the 2 caliper came from different locations, the 1st caliper came with a bill for $100.00. when the 2nd caliper came there was no bill and he said it was part of the same bill from last time. i was like ok. im not going to argue with him. lol
 
picked up the smoked tail lights over the weekend $80.00 for the 2 outers... got the 2 inners on order...

now just got the steel braided line right now.... waiting for slotted and drilled rotors to arrive.... and lastly wheel spacers....

Nice. It’s good to have those connections. I painted my calipers red when I did mine.

ULTIMATELY it was a billing error on their end. calipers were supposed to be $100 each but received 1 invoice for 2 calipers @ $100 total... lol
 
I'M DOING BBK CONVERSION RIGHT NOW ON MY 1ST GEN FX

i initially installed the LH caliper on RH side (bleeder valves pointing down) i have since switched them to the correct side....

I have the Turbocad knuckle adapter in hand but surprisingly I found out I did not have to use it. The rear caliper bolts on directly to the caliper mounts without any modifications. The only modification I did was to shave off the dust shield lip to accommodate the larger rotors.IMG_1937.JPG

******AKEBONO REAR CALIPERS ARE A DIRECT BOLT ON TO THE 1ST GEN FX KNUCKLES *****

so you do not need to buy 2nd knuckles/spindles to have rear AKEBONO calipers....

what you need to complete the job

1. PAIR of Akebono Rear calipers
2. PAIR of FX50 rear rotors
3. PAIR of stainless steal brake hose for FX50 calipers
4. shave lip or remove backing plate

THAT'S IT!!!

Were you able to keep the parking brake by bolting the rear caliper to the 1st gen knuckle and using the fx50 rotors? I thought that was the reason Turbocad did all the research and created the adapters for the 2nd gen knuckles as the parking brake could not otherwise be retained?

I think I’ve seen some other folks ask in this thread and the original Turbocad thread but does anyone still have the pdf with the full write up for the rear calipers? Or the one from this thread, as the link in the 1st post appears to be dead.

Also, I bought my own 2nd gen rear knuckles way back when I first stumbled across this great mod, and the knuckles came with the 2nd gen hub assemblies, parking cables and backing plates already attached, only the included backing plates still need to be bent/cut. Does this mean that I can mount the 2nd gen knuckles with the 2nd gen hubs already attached, with turbocad’s adapter only, in my 2006 fx35 and put on the FX50 rotors? Or will perhaps my gen 1 axles not fit the newer hub or parking cables not be compatible with my car? I thought all 4 corners were direct bolt on for 2nd gen 2009+ FXs so that’s why I got curious. Thanks a bunch to everyone who’s worked so hard on this mod!

Yes nothing changed regading the parking brake with the akebono calipers. The new SPORT rotors went right over the 1stgen parking brake. No mods, no trimming, nothing relating to parking brake was needed to be changed.

From the picture, you're only use half the the width of the brake pad on the rotor. Not sure how effective it will be.

From what I can piece together, it seems like these parts are what's needed to do the swap:

Front:
FX50S front calipers, rotors, and lines

Rear:
FX50S rear calipers, rotors, and lines
Maybe the turbocad adapter?
Trim brake shield a bit

What I don't think I saw specifically mentioned is what other cars use these calipers. I believe they're the same ones used on things like the G37S and Q50S, can anyone confirm? Or did the FX50S use model-specific parts?

I believe all the akebono calipers are the same, however you will need FX50 rotors to clear the rear parking brake shoe. I didn't get FX50 brake lines when I did my brake upgrade, I just got stainless steel brake lines intended for the FX35 and some banjo bolts and they work without issue. For the rear you need S51 FX knuckles and you don't actually need the turbocad adapter. All you need is 2 FX50 ball joint seats part number 40173-EG000. I got them from concept z and have had front and rear akebono's on for over a year now no issues. Also you will have to trim the edges on your brake shields to clear the rotors. Hope this helps.
