Morimoto HID Kit Fog Light Install

Good morning everyone,

I purchased the Morimoto Elite HID kit from TRS on Black Friday and will likely try my hand at installing it in the coming weeks. This will be my first time attempting such an install, and I'm doing my best to lay everything out and do my research before I begin.

Included in the kit:
  • 2 x H8 XB 3000K bulbs
  • 2 x XB35 ballasts
  • 2 x XB ignitors
  • 1 x HD relay
  • 1 x H8 male > female connector
Everything laid out:

I was reviewing the installation guide provided by TRS: https://www.theretrofitsource.com/media/custom/upload/EliteHIDSystem-H11.pdf

Based on what I read on page 3, my installation application is an internally wired light with the HD relay kit. So I went to the install diagram on page 7.

As I was going thru and simulating the installation of the HID kit on my lovely faux wood table, I noticed that each of the lights has a connector to connect to the original H8 bulb connector inside the housing.

However, on the diagram on page 7 of the install guide, there is only 1 such connector indicated? And only one wire that goes back to the relay?

I'm certain there's a logical explanation for this, I just haven't been able to find anything detailed on the forum or on YouTube to help me figure it out just yet. Any tips or advice for the install would be greatly appreciated.

Also, I will likely be removing the entire bottom half of the front bumper to access the lights and complete the install. Reason being is I'm hoping to procure the OEM front lip in the coming weeks, and figured I could knock out 2 birds with 1 stone (fog lights and front lip).

Any tips or recommendations for where to mount the ballasts, relays, etc. would be greatly appreciated. I read somewhere that depending on where you mount your ballasts, it may interfere with the front parking sensors? There may be additional things to avoid with the install, so figured I'd just ask. :)

Thes reason for the blank oem input in one bulb is the location of your relay harness.
TRS supply one input as the relay trigger and you can swap the location based on the harness location closer to battery.

That makes sense. TRS provides the customer with options for utilizing either OEM input, based upon their specific application and battery location?

Thanks for clearing that up for me!

Having a buddy of mine who works at a shop install my morimoto HID fogs tomorrow. I'll let you know how it comes out.

When I did my install, I mounted them to the frame/support behind the front bumper. They are clear of everything, and far from the parking sensors.

Nice. Are you referring to the steel impact bar behind the plastic front bumper? How did you mount them? Zip ties? Metal screws?

It's 2" square tubing that was behind the bumper. Pretty sure it was aluminum, but not 100% sure. I have them securely zip tied up and out of the way.

So I attempted to install the HID kit yesterday and I'm running into an issue where the fog lights won't come on when installed.

Steps taken:
  1. Unpacked my new Morimoto Elite HID setup and all parts were accounted for, with the exception of mounting brackets for the ballasts
  2. Test fit all connections to make sure fitment was good prior to install
  3. Using the supplied test lead, applied power through the ballast, ignitor and bulb to confirm all were in working order
  4. Both sets of ballasts/lights were flickering during the test, but I attributed this to the test leads not being securely connected to the battery
  5. Completed install of all aforementioned parts
  6. Fog lights will not turn on
Granted, this is my first time attempting any type of HID/electrical installation on my vehicle, but I believe I followed the directions supplied by TRS correctly and with attention to detail.

https://www.theretrofitsource.com/media/custom/upload/EliteHIDSystem-H11.pdf

Since I confirmed that power supplied directly to the ballast will ignite the bulbs, this leads me to believe that power may not be making it to the harness. Or that the harness may not be properly routing the power to the ballasts. Or it could even be an issue with grounding.

So I suppose my first question is, do the connections for power and ground in the pictures below look to be correct?

Here are some additional shots of the install:

Mounted the HD relay across from the washer fluid reservoir, with the wiring hanging down.

The directions weren't clear on what to do with the OEM input for this application (externally wired) so I tried turning on the lights with the OEM input from the harness plugged in to the OEM passenger side fog light connection, and again with no connections made. Neither option resulted in the lights turning on.

The passenger side ballast mounted on the crash bar. The kit didn't come with mounting brackets, so I used the zip tie solution.

Looks good nice pics on the install too.

Still have yet moved my ballast, how are the sensors with that position the ballast is in?

Well I finally completed the install and got the fog lights fully functional. Turns out there was an adapter that fit in between the HID harness and OEM fog light input that I had disregarded during the install process (I thought it was an extra part). Oh well, lights are shining bright like diamonds now. :D Maybe too bright, judging by the beam pattern.

I’m thinking of buying these Morimoto led fog light, so I was wondering what adapter are you referring to?

Unfortunately, I didn't snap a picture of the adapter. And it's also not listed in the instructions as part of the included items. But you'll find it packaged in it's own separate wrapping and it will labeled something like "H660 - H11M > 9006F."

Ok thanks I will look at it if I buy these fog lights

Need your guys help...running into some issues with my Morimoto fog lights :(

I finally got around to moving the ballast away from the sensors which now works out great. while i did that, i ended up buying new 6500K morimoto fogs light bulbs. Put them in and i'm having an issue with the passenger fog light turning on.

Sometimes it will turn on when i start the car, other times it won't fire up but if i turn my lights on and off a little bit it will finally come on.

Not only that, but comparing the two new 6500K bulbs - The one that doesn't turn on all the time looks a little different then the other side (the color doesn't match and looks off).

You think it could be a faulty morimoto bulb i got?

BTW - The 6500K bulbs match perfectly with the OSRAM 6K DS2 Head Lights. Much better then the 5500K morimoto Fogs. (in my opinion)
