Side Mirrors Downward Tilt in Reverse

Car
2015 QX70 RWD 3.7L V6
Name
Jon
I have a 2015 QX70; when in reverse, only one side-mirror tilts downward (depending on which side-mirror the switch on the dash is on; left or right, thus impacting the corresponding side-mirror). If the switch is in the middle, neither side-mirror tilts downward when reversing the vehicle. The dealership service dept advised that all of the Qs/QXs work as described, yet when I dropped off my vehicle today for warranty-service items, the loaner vehicle given to me is a 2018 Q70L (sweet ride!); and, wouldn't you know it - when put into reverse, BOTH side-mirrors tilted downward, regardless of where the side-mirror switch is positioned; left, right or middle (see photo - btw, what yahoo-Infiniti designer came up with the insane idea of locating the side-mirror switch & side-mirror open/close button to the lower/left dash panel?! Inconvenient as hell!)

I want my side-mirrors to operate the same way. Anyone know if this option is unique to the 2018 models and not the ‘15 Qs/QXs? Surely, the electrical components are there/could be added. Anyone know if there is a way to force this on later models? :sneaky:

Then I think it’s a known defect and Infiniti Service Dept staff always tell me they are working as designed; I say no way! I’ll hit them up again Monday since they currently have my QX70’for other warranty repairs. Thanks, AL Dan!

Pretty sure the manual says either one will tilt, or none at all depending upon the set up.

They got lazy with the FX/QX as it aged. No real updates except cosmetic ones. Not surprising other models have more advanced features.

The 2015 QX70 Owner's Manual says:
"Reverse tilt-down feature (if so equipped)
When backing up the vehicle, the right or left outside mirror will turn downward automatically to provide better rear visibility.
1. Push the ignition switch to the ON position.
2. Move the shift lever to the R (Reverse) position.
3. Select the right or left side mirror control switch.
4. The selected outside mirror surface moves dowdward."

The 2018 Q70 sedan I have as a loaner while warranty-items are being completed on my '15 QX70 tilts BOTH side mirrors downward in reverse; regardless of mirror selected. When switch is in the middle, neither mirror tilts downard on reverse (my earlier message indicated this feature happened even when in the middle; must have been mistaken) - and unfortunately, I can read/post the verbiage from the Owner's Manual because the dealership removed it from the vehicle. :-(

Yeah, so you’re probably SOL getting your QX70 to tilt both mirrors without some type of modification.

Would love to know what DIY modification could be done; It's hard to believe the functionality isn't easy to effect.

Anyone done this/know how?

Why would you want both to tilt down? I test drove a '17 Nissan Murano Platinum that both tilted down..very annoying to actually parallel park...if you are checking for oncoming traffic behind you on your left, you have to slouch down to look into the mirror when its tilted down..One is good for me :)

Because I use them mostly to back out of my driveway, which is about 50 feet long and isn't straight. I'm using the rear-camera view, but just aren't used to it yet (never had a review camera before and have only owned the QX70 since early May this year). Perhaps in time, I'll get used to "trusting" the review camera, angels, etc - but I like looking at each side mirror when backing out of my driveway to ensure I'm not running off the cement into the flowerbeds, plus always self-conscious of running over something that's not supposed to be there. There are lots of young children on our street and on occassion, toys, etc are left near the end of our driveway - not to mention, freakin' there may be a small child that sudden appears...I have no children, so...

I don’t use the mirror tilt feature at all, not even for parallel parking. When backing up I just turn my head and look over my shoulder out the back. The rear camera is used more for reassurance and extra visibility, but not primary visibility.

Do you have MOD turned on? I find the front sensors to be very sensitive, even for stationary objects. When I turn around in my driveway via 3 point turn the plants at the edge constantly set off the front sensors. I imagine the rear sensors would behave in the same manner.

Plus my driveway is about 500 feet long. I occasionally back all the way out... I don’t find the blind spots to be that bad, even for such a long distance that includes inclines and curves.

Sorry to be so dumb, but like I said, this vehicle still new; what is MOD? On this board, when I see that, I think of “modifying”. I’ve searched for a “mod” setting and don’t see it.

Oh, and failed to mention also concerned about darting pets. Neighbors around us aren’t that concerned with allowing their cats to roam, and we often get dogs that have gotten loose, so again, just being extra cautious! Oh hell, I’ll just say it; I’m old, and wear glasses - blind as a bat, need all the help I can get...lol!

At least I can report that I’ve yet to hit the garage wall with the new front camera/sensors, which was rather common in my FX.

MOD = Moving Object Detection.

=)

I hope I didn’t come across as snooty. Not my intention. Just also knowing my luck, the mirror motors would crap out and cost me a small fortune to replace. It took me a few weeks to get comfortable with the rather bulbous front end of mine.

Lol, uh - not at all; just my often-sometimes crass sense of humor... ;-)
I'll look for the Moving Object Detection setting, but not sure my model has it. I've got all-around cameras/sensors - but not Driver Assist.

Thanks for clarifing...

If you have the front sensors then I’m sure you have MOD, and it’s probably on by default. I only turn it off when my front bumper is coated in crusty ice and snow. I don’t have lane assist or radar cruise control either... nor would I want it.

I like using the mirrors tilted down to back up a see the lines in the parking lot, the edge of the driveway, etc. I love them tilting. I have the camera, MOD, etc., but they are just additional tools - not a substitute. At least that's my opinion.

When all else fails, read the friggin' manual...lol! I finally found how to tell if the MOD = Moving Object Detection was on; old-school me was looking for a "button" or switch"; when that failed, I was punching the display Info & Settings; turns out - it's located via the Camera button on the display, and yes - it was ON. Learned how to turn off as well by simply "tapping" the "ON" button via the touch-screen; geesh! I'm still getting used to all the fancy electronics that come with the QX's now. I had my '05 FX for thirteen years before it was totalled; purchased a CPO 2015 QX70, so quite a jump in the available technology...and I'm lovin' it!
