Suggestions for my exterior rebuild.

Reviving this thread because I dropped her off at my body shop to get repaired/repainted OEM KH3 black. Getting it vinyl wrapped about a month after (so the paint can cure first) but you guys will have to wait and see what it looks like :) Hint: 4 different colors...

Also ordered some exterior goodies from I-gear in Russia. It feels so good getting back into modifying the FX.

So what color/finish are you thinking of going with? Have you considered wrapping it yourself?

FWIW, you don't need to wait a month to wrap it if the paint was cured in an oven. When my BMW got hit, I had to rewrap it after bodywork and I did it 5 days after getting the car back. If it wasn't baked then it's best to wait. I would be very careful down the line when you remove the wrap from the bumpers and any plastic areas. Plastic body parts that have been repainted usually don't have nearly the same paint adhesion as OEM paint. Some clear bra installers won't even do cars that have been repainted. When I unwrapped my car I took extra care on the front bumper (aftermarket) and it was fine but I did lift the paint in a couple of spots on the bottom of the car. Rear bumper was OEM and I didn't have to be delicate, no damage.

Good info. I thought the same thing about wrapping after a repaint, someone told me for like off-gassing.

For the adhesion of a resprayed car: Would this be the same case if you used paint stripper and actually took the car back to bare aluminum and repainted?

I wouldn't worry about the metal body parts. My driver's door and quarter were replaced in an accident then I rewrapped. No issues removing the wrap at all. With plastic, it's the primer to plastic bond isn't as good for some reason. As I mentioned, my front bumper was aftermarket. The few spots that came up were where the primer just separated from the plastic. There wasn't paint to primer separation. It was just on the edge. But no other issues with lifting as I was careful. Also I had M3 style side skirts that I wrapped directly over the primer. When I unwrapped, the vinyl ripped off half the primer.

If you google, you'll see that most of the issues with paint damage from vinyl are on the bumpers or other plastic parts that have been repainted. Usually not repainted metal parts or even OEM paint on bumpers.

Thanks for the heads up :) Wasn't baked, and the shop recommended I wait a couple weeks and let it see sun before it gets wrapped. Also told me if there were any chips to touch them up so they dont peel up the paint with the wrap. She's getting wrapped in mid September and I picked her up from the shop in the end of July so it should be plenty of time.

Does anyone know if my fender liner will stay in place if I trim my rear fender, both the plastic trim and metal fender lip?
