RECALL CAMPAIGN PASS AIRBAG INFLATOR

My local dealer told me that the airbags are on national backorder with no ETA. Infiniti also told me no passengers up front till it gets replaced. Great....

I got update yesterday at dealer. Told me they have an interim fix that they will do now, & then they will do it again with newer parts. Something about the fix they have now having a lesser shelf life. I will opt to have this done once to minimize having to break it apart. Parts should be here by years end. & I also cant confirm the accuracy of all this. Was service manager talking that I have never met

Is the issue the airbag can go off at random? I drove the dog around last weekend and she is too light for the airbag to be armed.

Only if you have a passenger up front, not sure if dog is heavy enough, but I wouldn't ride a dog upfront, just to be safe. Recall is for the front right airbag only I think

But can it just go off without warning, like at any point? Or is it only if it's armed? So if someone too light to arm it, or no one in the seat, is it still an issue?

I thought the issue was someone could corrode and it could just go off for no reason. Or maybe the problem was the chemicals degraded and it wouldn't go off. I need to read the recall again.

I don't believe it randomly explodes. But in case of accident, it may explode with too much force and send shrapnel from the metal case. That's what's been injuring and killing people. High humidity areas cause the propellant to degrade and it basically becomes a grenade instead of a controlled explosion.

So I guess the solution is don't get into a collision... FWIW, I've had my letter from BMW for 8 months now and no update. Who knows how long the Infiniti will take to resolve.

I know, for such a dangerous recall you think they would try and expedite this. Maybe they'll give us a Q60 loaner until the fix comes out lol

Does anyone know if the entire dash will need to be taken apart? I talked to a service manager and they were still unclear of the replacement procedure.

Got it. Yeah sounds like the issue is the airbag may not properly inflate when activated and can send broken pieces flying. Wonder if the previously mentioned quick fix is deactivating the airbag?

Maybe they go up through the glove compartment then. Been awhile since I did a filter change so I can't remember what all is up there.

It's not on them, it's Takata. Takata isn't a huge company and they're trying to replace basically every airbag they've made in the last 15 years. Plus one of their transport trucks shipping airbags literally exploded in Texas, I'm sure that pushed the recall date back for some cars.

I wonder if anyone has pushed Infiniti on getting a loaner or rental. For BMW's, if you claim that you feel unsafe driving your car, they will pay for a rental. Some people have been driving a rental for months now waiting on parts. But the BMW recall involves driver side airbag as well. Infiniti and Lexus have only passenger side recall so I guess they can get away with saying "don't have anyone sit there". Mostly liability, if you have a passenger and they get injured by defective airbag, they can always go back and say "I told you so".

As zebra said, they should be able to access airbag without pulling dash. I've pulled an airbag from an Acura without removing the dash before. Glovebox comes out and the airbag is bolted to a support beam. Looked at the FX once a while back and it looked similar.
