Seventy and still turning wrenches for pleasure only. I own and have driven my FX35 for just over 220,000 miles and I’m just now starting to experience a few problems. I love the performance and looks of my FX, and I don’t want to have to replace it. Consequently I find myself working on it practically every weekend, but my latest issue has me stumped.

Lately I’ve been unable to restart the engine after running for maybe thirty minutes or so. Once the engine cools down after sitting for another thirty minutes or so it will restart and run flawlessly until I turn it off again, and the aforementioned starts all over again.

Possibly the coolant temp sensor?
Thank you, I’ll try replacing that sensor. I seem to remember reading something about that possibly being the problem. Thanks again, if that solves my problem I’ll have to buy you a drink.

Regards,

Woods

Could be either cam shaft position sensor. You should consider getting a code reading tool so you can pull existing as well as pending codes which are those that have yet to throw a check engine light. Much better than replacing things willy-nilly.

Thanks, I’ve replaced both cam sensors and the crankshaft sensor. The only code I get is catalytic issue and my mechanic assured me this would not cause my problem. I just received the temp sensor and will install today. Thanks to all for your suggestions. Woods

Temp sensor installed and still will not start until it cools down. No codes except for cat code which shouldn’t cause my issue.

What brands were the cam and crankshaft sensors? Some of the aftermarket ones are notorious for being bad out of the box.

Thanks, I thought that perhaps although new the crank sensor might have been bad so I had the manufacturer send me a second one, but it too have affect.

The more I read the more I feel that the catalytic converter could be the issue, or perhaps simply the O2 sensor. What’s everyone's take on this brain storm?

Thanks Folks,

Any crank or cam sensor that's not original equipment (hitachi) is suspect at a minimum and really should just be avoided. WAY too many VQ owners can testify to this.

Thanks, I’ve been avoiding investing in sensors through the dealer because of the expense. I’ve had several scans and they all point to a catalytic converter issue, which according to my parts supplier wouldn’t cause my issue. Further, if any of my sensors were bad wouldn’t a scan somehow point to that as an issue?

Yesterday I noticed something I hadn’t noticed before. While ideling I heard a slight clicking or ticking noise, and when I shut the engine off and later, while the engine was still hot I tried to restart the car didn’t hear the click/ticking. This morning I switched the ignition on and once again I could hear the very same sound, and the engine fired right up. Could whatever is making this noise be my problem (clicking when cold and/or running, the no clicking after shutting the engine down hot). This noise is similar to the sound a turn signal might make, but much less noticeable.

Any thoughts?

You don't need to give your $ to the stealer. I know Hitachi is oem for many if not most sensors and I think Denso or some other company starting with a D makes various sensors for Nissan. Hitachi for cams, crank & coil packs, this I know. Anything else, research on this site or try my350z.com or use your search engine. I foolishly bought 02's from the dealer a couple years ago. Overpaid for those.
