transmission question

Hey guys I was talking to a mechanic @ pepboys and he told me that regards to fx35 transmission oil, as long as its the same grade, you can use any other transmission oil. Is this true? I had 06 infiniti G35 and told to use ONLY J matic transmission oil.. Another question: anyone used any other transmission oil?

If you are under warranty, using anything other than Nissan Matic J will void the warranty. That being said, Nissan Matic J is discontinued and is being replaced with Nissan Matic S.

Dealers will continue to use Nissan Matic J until the supply is gone. You can use Nissan Matic S in addition to Nissan Matic J (I now use Nissan Matic S).

Why risk it? Matic J and S aren't that expensive.

you can use any ATF fluid that you like, it just voids the warranty, assuming your transmission is still under warranty.

Nissan states they put "special" additives to protect the transmissions. Whether it's a gimmic or not, voiding the warranty is not a gimmic and is true. I might have heard of one transmission failure on the .org, but not even sure about that. And most are using Nissan Matic J or S.

You can use:

Which, specifically says it's compatible with Nissan Matic J. It's more expensive than Nissan Matic J or S, and most transmissions I know of haven't failed on it, so I don't see a valid reason to switch.

There are some that even don't recommend a "power" flush, where it can do more damage than good. The Nissan mechanics won't do it on CVT transmissions for sure, and only do a drain and fill (6 qts). They recommended I change the transmission fluid more often, but only do a drain and fill vs a full flush (12 qts). Said it was safer on the transmission.

Are you thinking of switching or just curious?

well i just purchased my fx and i was thinking about doing minor tune ups: change the air + cabin filter, oil change, tire rotate, and etc. Since my fx is 04 w/ 36k miles, i believe the warranty is over thus, thinking about using different atf.

called my local shop (Subaru specialist who's familiar with the JATCO 5EAT). Told me the tranny has to be power-flushed and they'd send it to a BG-equipped shop.

We're due for a transmission flush and rear diff oil change before a road trip in June. Just trying to plan resources now since I don't get much time away from work these days.

Matic-S and DIY (or the shop) or power-flush at BG place?

matic S is sold now a days, DIY is not that difficult, I've done it once, didn't even have to jack my car up. get a helping hand, one fills in the fluid while the other's underneath the car draining it.

If you change your transmission oil on a regular basis, a drain/fill will be fine. I would be more worried about a power flush, BG power flushes run around 280 PSI. That's a lot of pressure and would rather play it safe.

I actually paid the dealer $180 to flush mine about a week ago, i think for the peace of mind it was worth the $$$. I did notice slightly crisper shifts (especially to and from second) it was a little costly but worth driving the loaner for 2 days:rolleyes:

i just flushed my trans with nissan matic j. i would never use any other fluid, additives or conditioners in this transmission. i am an ase certified master technician and this is one complicated, expensive tranny that i dont want to have to replace because i used the wrong fluid or put an additive in it that destroyed it. stick with stock when it comes to the trans.

Having the same problem? Should I get the transmission flush through the dealer. They are trying to hit me up for $200.

My old roomate used the store-brand ATF at the oil change station in his Nissan X-Terra at the recommendation of the attendant. His tranny went out ~5k miles later and they (nissan and the change station) wouldn't warranty anything because of the non-JMatic fluid.
