Traditional to synthetic oil change

Hey guys

Not here to debate what type of oil is best (i used search and think i know that answer) but what i am trying to figure out is if there is anything negative that can happen with my next oil change

Turns out my fx has always had regular oil changes .. but it has never had synthetic in it (i was shocked and po'ed at the previous ower too)

I of course want to go synthetic as that is what i have always used in my cars ... but seeing that this has so many kilometers (120k) on it im kinda spooked to make the switch

Has anyone been down this path and can give me some experienced feedback?

I change my oil every 5k and traditional dino oil is fine for that. I personally switched to synthetic around 90k. Although there is people who say changing to a thinner synthetic at higher mileage could cause leaks from seals that are worn.

120000km = 75,000 miles. You should be able to switch with no problems. As long as your car does not have any current leaking on regular oil, 75,000 on this engine is still considered quite low.

Mobil 1 has a high mileage full synthetic. I've been using this for years. My FX has around 180,000 miles. But at 120,000km, you should use regular synthetic oil... 120km is not very high on these engines as long as the previous owner did regular oil changes.

You'll be fine. If a motor starts burning oil after you switch to synthetic, the motor already has issues and would have started burning oil anyways even on regular oil. Unless you swap to a super low viscosity oil, switching to synthetic won't impact anything.

And why are you mad at the previous owner? The FX doesn't require synthetic oil like a BMW so if the previous owner got regular oil changes, then he did the right thing. Even if you take it to a dealer, they don't use synthetic unless you tell them and pay the difference.

Why am i mad .. its mostly to do with him not changing any of the transmission / differential fluids ..
To your point synthetic isnt required and in his case while he did all of the oil chnages at the dealership he didnt opt for the synthetic

I have always been a mobile 1 junkie ..so based on what im seeing here it would make sense to go down that path on the fx also

What would you recommend in terms of viscosity and oil filters?

I don't know how long you've owned your FX, but differential fluid changes happen at 60K mile intervals so he didn't really neglect anything. And your transmission technically uses lifetime fluid so there is no change interval although I'd recommend it. It's sealed so they will have to pump fluid in as there's no dipstick. With regards to the oil, the interval matters much more than regular or synthetic or brand.

Viscosity is going to be dependent on lots of factors. Where you live seems to be much colder than where I live so I would use whatever viscosity is recommended for your climate. I've never worried much about filters, I run K&N right now because I bought several a while back but I've run Mobil1 in the past as well as others and have never had problems with any. I typically ran Mobil1 oil in my FX, but right now I'm running Castrol 0W-40 since that's what I run in my BMW and it's easier to just buy a lot of the same oil.
