TPMS Sensors

I'm planning on buying a steel wheels specific for snow tires for my QX50.

Wheels and tires are the easy part of the equation.

Will I need to purchase original manufacturer TPMS sensors or can I get by purchasing a generic set TPMS sensors? Will I need a TPMS programmer to reprogram them when I switch wheelsets - regular wheel set to winter snow tires?

Thoughts?

I don't think generic set of TPMS sensors will work with the existing system in the Infiniti. You don't need a TPMS programmer to change tire sets, but you need a tool.
For me, I purchased used OEM sensors for my winter setup and purchase an ATEQ Quickset tool. This tool allows me quickly change TPMS sets in the Infiniti.

Kanedesn, thanks for the quick response.

I was quoted $130 each for the Infiniti OEM TPMS sensors. I can pickup a set of generic ones from amazon.com for approximately $125USD

Anyone successfully tried a set of generic TPMS sensors?

yeah, but what if they don't work after you installed them? get them local if you can. that way you can exchange them if there's a problem. i got my sensors at discount tires. the first set didn't work at all. they told me to drive around a day or so. that didn't work. i brought them back and got another set. they programmed them, and the sensors seemed to work and then i drove off. the next time i started the vehicle and drove it around, the sensors wouldn't read. i brought it back and they reprogrammed them again and the same problem happened just days later. sometimes 1, 2 or 3 sensors would show up after driving for a while. i gave up after that since i wasted too much time on the whole thing..

You can get generic ones from COSTCO for about $50 each... Probably a lot less in the US than in Canada... They might sell the metal rims too... Not sure... But nice thing is that they do the reset for the TPMS for free (the dealership usually charges)...

DatMan, thanks for the suggestion. Super easy to deal with Costco in the event I run into problems with the TPMS.

The dealership sells the 18” steel black rims for 120$ each....just looked them up on the costco.ca site and they sell $74.99 each which is even a better price!

I picked up an used OEM TPMS set from eBay for like $15 each. It was a killer deal...
Only problem buying used is that the batteries have a limited lifetime... Anywhere from 5 to 7 years depending on how harsh the climate is... So in Canada, it's closer to 5... :(

I live in northern Alberta, and this season will be my 4th season using them. They are still going strong.

Which tool are you using to get the ECU to relearn the TPMS sensor addresses?

I've used the ATEQ tool to switch between summer and winter tire tpms sets a few times before. But this time around I took an incorrect step and had the key on ACC instead of ON when programming using the tool. Now the two front sensors don't read all the time (its either one or the other at random times, never both at the same time!!).. and sometimes the stars align and all 4 work until the next time I start the car. The rear ones dont have any issues. Does anyone know whats wrong? (The sensors are 2 winters old, highly doubt its the battery). I've tried reprogramming a couple of times as well.

Might have to unplug the battery for a while to reset the computer in the car... The ATEQ unit I have never worked properly... Only worked when reading the TPMS sensors, but when I went to "write" them, then it would put my car in a weird holding pattern and I wouldn't be able to access a lot of car "settings" cause it said something to the effect that my OBII port was in use or something (although nothing would be plugged in at this point)...

I dont have any of those issues. just the one i described. But I'll try disconnecting the battery for about 20mins and see how it goes.
