touch up paint pens

hey guys, after a horrible winter and a car washing later ive found out i have a butt load of large rock chips so i was forced to order a touch up pen. Has anyone used it? how does it look afterwards, and any tips as how to get the best touch up on without f'in it up . lol

there are a few different types, some are a touch up pen, but then the whole top twists off to reveal a touchup brush too, the brush is better than the pen, the key is to wipe the brush just about dry so you don't blob on too much, you can always add or go over it if you need too. some types also come with a color & a seperate clearcoat, don't think nissan uses those though...

remember, a touch up is never going to be invisable, but if it makes the blemish the same color & fills it in somewhat then it can hide it fairly well. good idea to have a little laquer thinner handy if you make a mistake just wipe it off & try again, also you should clean the chip(s) out well with laquer thinner too before the touchup, laquer thinner won't hurt you paint but be careful with it on lenses & other plastic trim...

oh ookay awesome, i placed an order for a pen, i dont think it has the brush tip , and it has a basecoat and clear coat, should i change my order? the colour is matched to the black obsidian tho, the colour code was KH3, but i was worried about the brush and makikng it look even worse with huge blobs of paint haha.

the pens aren't horrible but sometimes there a little bit of a pain to use. test it out on a scrap to get the paint flowing first & then touch it up with the pen, color enough to cover, then after that drys a bit the clear on top... as long as you use it conservatively you should be fine...

oh, also, no matter which type you get, be sure to really shake the hell out of it before even trying to use them, the paint will seperate & will need very agressive agitation to get it all flowing smoothly again, that's one of the biggest problems people have, that & blobbing on too much...

The problem I had was that the pen only worked once, then it dried out and won't flow anymore. I just use the brush. It's only for wheel touch ups though. As John knows, I will be using it alot on one wheel soon. :frown:

there was a member recently that got some touch up paint - but it wasnt the pen style. I cant seem to find the thread now........

just wash my car today ant notice some rock chips on the front bumper and side doors too :( must be the gravel road i drove on today :(

I have use touchup pen before on another car and fail miserably..... it became a blob of ink.

that was 2 years ago, I want to give it another try as the chips are bugging the hell out of me now that i see it.

If i do it really carefully and be conservative with how much i use, is it possible to create a clean smooth paint surface?

I bought Scratch Fix 2 in 1 based on the recommendation of my local Nissan dealer. (No Infiniti dealers local) The code was correct on the applicator but it is not even close in color. The Dr colorchip seems to get good reviews and I will be trying that next.
