OK I know Im gonna catch some for this but I need some advice.

Iv had my fx for about two years now and a couple things about it are starting to bother me. The biggest thing is that about 3 months after owning it it started doing the rattle on cold start ups. Never had any problems only lasts a second. Here are my questions.

Will this eventually lead to engine damage?

Should i start the search for a new fx?

Will a timing chain tensioner maybe fix this? I saw a video and have built engines before (2jzgte) so I could do it no problem.

I love the car and dont really want to spend the time searching for a new on. I just did new rotors and pads all around and new tires. The car is about to turn 128k

What should I do new car or ride it out? Id love to get rid of this noise and from reading all of the many threads about it everyone else would as well.

Thanks for the help guys.

You would buy a new car over what could be a meaningless rattle?

I mean I guess we don't know how bad it is, but judging by your attitude about it, and the fact that you drove the car with said rattle for another 1.5 years it can't be that bad...lol

Its the always talked about rattle of the timing area on start up.

I guess its starting to bother me more than it used to. Im just getting nervous about it. How long has everyone else had this rattle and still fine?

I do have a intermittent rattle at cold startup but i am quite sure it sounds like a starter pinion that is retracting a bit slow and is getting a whoop from the flywheel.
But it has been doing that for like 5 years. :smile (2):
Also some slight ticking from the valves when it's cold but it goes away when it's warm.

As far as i can see these engines are as good as indestructible when treated right.

the cats are a common problem on these cars. per infiniti, i had the same heatshield rattle and removed them and still there. the parts rep told me that the cats are a common problem. fuckers.

I had a rattle at idle found out it was coming from my header heat shield. Put the car in the air and found a small gap where the heatshield is welded. Clamped it down with a vice and noise went away, the noise doesnt really bother me anymore...

I've been on these forums for almost a decade and am not familiar with a rattle in the engine related to something in the timing cover. I'd get that checked out.

That being said, I got the exhaust rattle that so many FX's seem to get. I bought a $3 metal band clamp and put it around the rattling exhaust heat shield and the problem was solved.

I'd suggest you try to ID EXACTLY where the rattle is coming from before you go and buy a different vehicle.
