Terrible grinding noise when braking when wet

Hello!

I just joined the forum because I just picked up a 2008 Autumn Copper FX35 AWD a couple weeks ago. I absolutely love it! Today in Chicago we got hit with a fairly large snow storm. When I would go to brake there would be an AWFUL grinding noise that seemed to be coming from the driver side front wheel. The FX would not brake very well at all, often taking 100 or so feet to stop when i was only driving about 15 miles per hour. The brake pedal would shake and the steering wheel would shake a little too. When the roads are dry, the FX brakes just fine. Anybody know what the problem could be?

Thank you!

Welcome to IS! Is the sound physical or mechanical? The ABS going off shouldn't make the steering wheel shake though. Maybe its an alignment or wheel balance issue when the roads are wet? How are the tires? 100 feet to stop is quite a bit. Today I was testing my new winter tires for fun in the snow and from 15mph I could stop in less 20 feet with moderate braking.

Thank you for the replies! The tires are Yokohama YK520's with about 1/2 the tread left. I had almost no control of the vehicle when i was braking and this grinding noise would happen. It only seems to be coming from the drivers side. Could it possibly be pads or rotors?

Oh, and the

And the what.......????? Mine does the same thing when I brake hard and it's wet/icy (noise, slight wheel shake) if you don't have winters on braking in snow is difficult in the fx. At least during my short observation when Seattle was hit with a snowmageddon in 2008.

I meant to say, Oh and the SLIP light does not come on during the grinding noise.

I was not expecting braking to be this bad. My 1996 Trans Am brakes better when i use to drive her in the snow.

You're experiencing something abnormal. Not that the FX is ever going to brake better than a sports car...

I had grinding noise when it was really cold outside. Changed my rotors and pads, no more grinding noise. Definitely a different sound than the ab going off.

the last time i drove in the snow with my fx i had a grinding noise and i could feel it .....it turned out to be pice of ice stuck in my caliper.
