Synthetic oil change intervals

Hey guys

I'm thinking of switching over to synthetic oil (Castrol Edge) with FRAM ultra filters and i'm wondering what would be the change interval?

Thinking of just changing it twice a year, I do more or less 18,000km (11,000 miles) per year

Thanks!

I do 99% highway. I change the synthetic oil at the maintenance recommended interval of 12,000 km, which turns out to be twice a year.

Fram is no longer what it used to be...company was purchased by a Chinese OEM and is low quality filters, stick with Mobil 1, Bosch, K&N or OEM

If you want to try to extend your intervals get some of the used oil sample and send it to Blackstone labs. They can tell you how well your oil held up and recommended if you can extend the interval. I did this and got up to about 5,000 miles and that's what I've been going with. Although last change I was pretty low on oil so I may go shorter now.

I changed the oil in my FX50 to mobil1 5w30 and after a couple thousand miles it started doing this ticking or clicking noise from the valve covers, very annoying. I will try a different brand and maybe thicker oil to hopefully make the noise go away. If not, warranty!

Yeah I heard the same however, FRAM Ultra still retain their quality from what i heard. the orange fram filters are crap, but the the ultras are still very good. we shouldn't sum up a company's quality with their crappiest product, thats what i heard. lol

You may be correct regarding the FRAM Ultra...who knows but i will play it safe with BOSCH or Purolator por K&N...
OEM should be technically good as well but we should keep in mind that ''Regular'' filters were designed for regular dyno oil so it would be safer for us who use synthetic oils with longer intervals to stick with top tier quality filters designed for synthetic oils with longer intervals

Getting my first oil change since buying my FX next week, been about 3K miles on standard oil since January.. Making the switch to Synthetic for the first time.

Dealership told me it would be about $90 for a synthetic oil change, decided to buy my own and go with Pennzoil Ultra Platinum ($28 for 5 qts at Walmart) and Mobil 1 M1-108 Extended Performance filter ($10). They charge just $20 for labor if I provide my own oil/filter. Plan to change the oil every ~5K. Im sure I could go longer, but its cheap insurance to keep it running smoothly

Good to know.. Only chose the M1-108 because it was the first on the list of recommended filters on Mobil's website. Do you think the taller filter would have any performance advantages over the shorter one?

Changed the oil to Valvoline High Mileage Full Synthetic 10w30, ticking noise is gone!

I have read so much with some conflicting advice...
There is no evidence that a taller filter improves performance, however the FX35 (M1-108) filter is exactly the same as the FX50 (M1-110) it is just a taller version.
I feel that a taller filter has somewhat an increased oil flow capacity which is a good thing
Back during the days when I had the A4 one of the sludge problems was due to a smaller oil filter so for our FX as long as it fits perfectly I would choose a taller version
What is also crucial is oil changes intervals especially since my wife does very short commutes the engine does not have enough time to reach normal operational temperatures...add to that hot summers and blistering cold winters I feel I am better protected by changing oil/filter every 4 months. Most damage happens when you start the engines so by using a high quality Synthetic oil it will leave a protective film inside the engines parts for increased protection...

As an alternative K&N HP-1010 psi relief is a taller filter. I've been using them.

FX50 full synthetic Mobil 1 I still change it after around 3500 miles since I mostly drive shorter trips besides my twice daily 40 min commute
