decided to ditch the spare tire and build my own box after not being able to find a slim setup locally that i could actually test and hear the sound coming out of. the box is just slightly undersized as i forgot to account for the space the speaker takes up inside the box as well as a box around the tire mount so i could secure the entire speaker box to it but i dont really notice anything weird with the sound. sounds fine to me.

So that subwoofer is already fully enclosed?

not sure what you mean, is it free air? NO! it is not, it needs a box, the specs are on JL's website for the size of box needed for ported and non ported, i used a box calculator to determine how i should make the box, i just didnt account for the space the speaker itself took inside the box when building the box, so the box itself should have been a tiny bit bigger

Ahhhh... From one of the pictures, it looked like a fully enclosed unit, but that wouldn't make sense if you made a box for it LOL! Pretty nice job! When everything is put back together, is the SUB visible? Or under the trunk floor?

its under the trunk floor, the speaker is a slim one though so it can use a smaller box than most normal 10" woofers, there is probably 1/2" clearance from top of the speaker screen cover to the deck lid, the screen itself is about 1" above the outer edge of the woofer. i forgot the max excursion, i think its around 5/8"

Nice work! Still on the fence about replacing the BOSE subwoofers... I know they're not great, but 5.5" long throws sound good for the low, but not-so-low bass... I find I prefer bass when it's used with several speakers pushing the sound... So thinking of adding an aftermarket amp to drive the BOSE subs, and getting 2x under-seat subs with built-in amps... I'm very limited in what I can order in Canada, so thinking of sending the stuff to my cousin's place and working on the FX during a "visit"... :) I might finally get serious with the audio upgrade this summer... Been mulling it over for a few years now :P

let me just say anyone doing such a mod, do yourself a favor and dynamat your cargo area at the same time. i did this on tuesday after installing the sub over 8 months ago and it makes a world of difference. i didnt take pictures but i think i forgot to plug in a wire connection as my rear sonar sensors dont work atm. gonna take everything apart tomorrow and ill take a few pics. vibrations used to rattle the sunglass holder/sun roof control. they are practically gone now. the bass actually sounds cleaner without all the rattling. not that it sounded bad before but the rattling was horrid and had to turn down the gain a bit to get it to stop
