Storage box

Does anyone have pictures of storage boxes on factory roof rails with factory cross bars? I am thinking about buying one for snowboards but I am not sure how it would fit on there and how it would attach.

I've seen a few here with the Thule brand. I remember an issue with them stopping the hatch from opening all the way but don't think it was that big of a problem.

I have seen a few as well, but people would have aftermarket cross bars on roof rails. Because the aftermarket cross bars, you can space any way you want. I don't know if you can do that with OEM ones, that's why I am asking if anyone has mounted the box on oem cross bars.

I believe you can change the spacing on the oem crossbars. I noticed a few mount holes but I havent tried it myself. I'll do so as we get closer to winter since my snowboards weren't positioned very well last season.

You can move the rear cross bar to one of three locations. The front bars location is fixed.

You are correct though the movement of the bars is really restricted and therefore less flexible then aftermarket bars. The bonus of the OEM bars is they look really nice, and blend in with the car, whereas aftermarket bars often look pretty bad.

As far as the box goes, the bars will support it, but placement may be an issue depending on the flexibility of the feet on the box.

I noticed that too, my snowboards weren't positioned right either when I mounted the thule snowboard attachment.

Thanks for clarifying that for me. I am trying to find a cheap box that fits 4 snowboards, seems hard as those things are really expensive.

If I find something I like, I will ask to test fit first I guess. And you are right, I love the look of the factory cross bars, I think it looks pretty slick

Any reason you don't just get a big rack:

That's 4 snowboards and 1 set of skis on my Yakima FatCat 6's. I can lock the boards up, and not have to worry about a thing.

I did a lot of research on my rack setup before I bought anything. I looked all over at both cross bar setups, and different racks. My requirements were the ability to haul 4 snowboards, in the winter, and 2 DH bikes in the summer. All the while I didn't want to be removing my cross bars all the time, so looks were important.

The end result was:

-OEM Crossbars
-Yakima FatCat 6's for my winter setup.
-2 x yakima high roller racks for my summer setup.

I can still operate my hatch perfectly with all my gear mounted, and the setup is stable, easy to remove or swap out, etc.

I do have a rack but my stuff gets really dirty up here from a 4 hour drive to and from the mountains. That's why I'm toying with an idea to get a box

^ thanks man, there is some really good info there, it helps ALOT. I was trying to find a thread like that but wasn't able to that's why I made a new one.

i have the Thule boxster with thule rails and i love it. easy to mount and holds alot.Iery aerodynamic so wind noise is very low. I have been through many options for snowboards from yakima fatcat 6, to a long box thule. I would never go back to ski rack.

in one of the links pornandbeans posted I saw your post and it linked me to your thread. I think you said the box was making a lot of wind resistance that you can actually feel and a lot of noise. Is that the old thule box you had?

"pornandbeans" . . . I like it! Haha! :)

Yes that was my old thule box. The new one Booster is totally different. Low wind noise an drag. Milage is effected alittle but not much

I will take a look at that one then. I notice the mileage difference even with snowboard rack when I have 4 snowboards up there
