Snow, snow, saftey

Hey everyone,

New member here, new FX50s owner. Needless to say, really happy with the choice to go with this sweet ride. :)

The FX is the family car. We only have 1 car. We live up in the Pacific North West. We get ok snow, nothing drastic. Lots of rain. The mountain is an hour away with massive amounts of snow for playing.

My main concern / question is about a set of snow wheels and tires. I have seen lots of posts about using a 2nd set of wheels, but I don't really know what will work for the FX. I really can't afford another set of 21" oem wheels. I did see a link to a knock off site that sounds more like a bait and switch site. What do you guys do? Buy a new set of wheels for summer and use the OEM's for winter?
Or is there a cheap solution to just some winter wheels? Like go down to a 20" or something?
Can I go down to an 18"?? Like from an FX35?
And I guess a final solution would be to buy 21" snow tires and just go to the tire shop and have them switch out the tires. Cost a little bit of money each time and kind of a pita. :|
In theory, I would only need them from like late Nov to Feb / March. The 21" bridgestones should do fine in rain. I just worry about real world snow.

Thanks guys,
-Dave

yes you can go 18" I am running 18" winter wheels with Michelin Xi2's. forget the size off hand but they do throw my speedo out but only about 10 km\hr and it is slower not faster so safe for the speed traps. for snow you want to go with a narrower tire. the 21" summers will be no good to you in the rain if it is below 5C. Not useless but they start to show why they are really only a summer tier. In the snow they are no good at all. buy the way i live in Edmonton alberta Canada. and the FX is the wifes maine car for work all winter. 280km round trip 5 days a week.

Yes, the OE Bridgestones tires.

I don't have any experience with those tires in particular but I run my Paradas year round with no problems. Not that we ever get huge amounts of snow in Portland but I do make several trips to the mountain every year, always carry chains, and have never been stuck. Not even close really...
FX AWD =
