Service engine code

Service engine light came on. Autozone said it's either the camshaft sensor or cam timing/position sensor but cant tell me which one it is. How can I narrow it down. They said one is in the front and one may be in the back?

There are 2 camshaft position sensors Left and Right. Only way to tell is hook up the consult II at the dealer to see which is bad. Couldn't autozone tell you with their error code scanner if it was the left or right? Dealer price for the sensor is around $70-80.

they siad it was right or left. Im not sure if he didnt know how or wanted to try to sell me both

No, if you are handy around a car and have some tools you can probably do this yourself. The hard part is getting to it. It comes out with a 10mm socket to remove the bolt and you have to unplug the sensor. It is located at the back of the engine on top of the valve cover.

Drove around a bit today and the engine light went off and stayed off. It ran great when the light was on and still runs great. Never acted gunny at all. Weird for the light to go off on it's on

If the cam position sensor is bad it will eventually fail and the FX will not start. Best to get it replaced before that happens.
