This is not my pic, but mine looks similar, is this of concern (the W shaped metal piece with holes) ?

That's pretty common especially since you live up north. It's mostly surface rust, I'd just keep an eye on it.

what is that piece for anyways. if i were to guess it appears to be some form of member to stiffen the car ?

It is a small crossmember. The rust is just natural in north america. Its nissan. They dont use enough undercoat on the underside of their cars & most suspension parts exhibit rust earlier than most manufacturers. I bought my 2014 qx70 & it already had signs of rust on exhaust. One of my next projects is to undercoat it & paint the suspension arms & crossmembers with rustoleum black.

yep that happens. Mine got that surface rust before I could get it undercoated.

It looks like it has been sitting in water for a long time, that is so much for just normal weather wear and tear.

No, it's pretty common for those who live in the North in the US. It's all the salt on the roads. That brace will rust, exhausts often rust out, and I've seen pics of suspension parts rusting. Even stainless steel exhausts can rust. It's mostly surface rust, but if you let it go on too long, it will become structural. If it sat in water, there would probably be less rust as the lack of oxygen actually slows it down.

I think that cars from say the Southwest US would look more like the ones in Libya and not have rust as there is no salt on the roads and the air is dry.

I noticed that mine is also rusting before I put on the undercoating as well. I also noticed that the exhaust is starting to rust at some parts. I'm replacing it anyway in a while, so I'm not too worried.

bought two cans of matt black rust paint and sprayed all over the rusted bottom of the car. let's see how long it holds up.

It should last as long as it was wire brushed and cleaned up properly.

Each time I change the oil, I juice up a rag pretty good with used oil and put a nice coat of oil all over those parts, the sway bar, oil pan, and other exposed members. That does keep some of the rust at bay.

But doesn't that get really, really dirty? I'd hate to work on a car with used motor oil coating parts.
